Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Senior-Level Civil or Geotechnical Engineer to join our U.S. Energy and Resources Geotechnical Team, focusing on tailings storage facilities and mine waste.

You will lead complex geotechnical work across the full mining lifecycle, mentor engineers, and engage with regulators and clients to deliver defensible designs. You will collaborate with a national team of geotechnical professionals, travel for site inspections as needed, and contribute to advancing industry practice

Qualifications

• Exceptional technical writing and leadership abilities.
• Experience with water dam and/or mine waste/tailings design.
• Experience applying TSF design, performance monitoring, and risk-based decision-making frameworks.
• Knowledge of tailings risk management, including FMEA and TARPs.
• Experience interfacing with ITRBs, regulators, and external stakeholders.
• Ability to integrate monitoring technologies into dam safety programs.
• Closure and post-closure design experience for TSFs and mine waste facilities.
• Knowledge of filtered tailings, thickened tailings, and alternative deposition technologies.
• Experience under EoR/DEoR frameworks and accountability practices.
• Ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary and global teams and mentor others.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to a collaborative team delivering rigorous engineering solutions across mining and dam safety projects.
• Lead and review geotechnical projects through the full lifecycle—from investigation to detailed design, construction support, operations and closure.
• Perform and review advanced geotechnical analyses using GeoStudio, Rocscience, and FLAC focusing on tailings and mine waste structures.
• Develop high-quality deliverables, including reports, memos, specifications and design drawings, aligned with best practices.
• Engage with ITRBs, regulators, and external reviewers to present clear, defensible technical findings.
• Develop and maintain client relationships, support proposals, scope definition, budgeting and business development.
• Mentor junior engineers and support talent development within the team.
• Serve as DEoR or EoR for tailings facilities and assume EoR responsibilities when needed.
• Promote safe work practices and ensure regulatory compliance during field activities.
