Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a Senior AI/ML Engineer to design and deploy generative AI solutions at scale, focusing on LLMs, RAG pipelines, and agent-based systems. You’ll work across AI/ML, data science, product, and engineering teams to deliver enterprise-grade AI capabilities.

Remote work is allowed anywhere in the United States, with a requirement to be in the Minneapolis or Washington, DC area four days a week if located there.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in ML/AI engineering including production ML systems.
• 5+ years of Python-based ML with PyTorch/TensorFlow/Hugging Face.
• 3+ years building Generative AI or LLM apps including prompt engineering and fine tuning.
• 2+ years designing retrieval augmented generation (RAG) systems and vector search pipelines.
• 1+ years building agentic AI systems including tool calling, planning or multi-agent workflows.
• 1+ years using AI-assisted development tools like Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf.
• Healthcare experience.

Responsibilities

• Design and deploy generative AI and NLP solutions using transformer-based architectures for enterprise use cases.
• Develop and fine-tune large language model applications using OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, LLaMA, or Mistral.
• Design and implement RAG pipelines with document ingestion, embedding generation, and vector DB integration.
• Build agentic AI systems with single/multi-agent workflows for tool use, reasoning and planning.
• Implement evaluation and monitoring for AI systems including hallucination and bias checks.
• Develop safety and governance controls with prompt hardening and responsible AI guardrails.
• Productionize AI/ML pipelines with CI/CD, testing and observability in cloud environments.
• Collaborate with product/platform/data science to translate requirements into scalable AI solutions.
