Understood is hiring a Senior Full-Stack Engineer to work across frontend, backend, and AI systems. You’ll collaborate with product, design, data, and content teams to build platforms powering Understood.org and AI experiences.

The role emphasizes React/Next.js on the frontend, Python/Django on the backend, and LLM-powered products, including conversational AI and multimodal interfaces. Hybrid in NYC with a Mac laptop provided.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software development with frontend and backend depth.
• Proficiency in TypeScript, React, Next.js, plus Python and Django.
• Experience designing RESTful APIs and relational databases.
• Comfort with cloud environments (GCP/AWS).
• Familiarity with observability tools and production health ownership.
• Demonstrated ability to lead projects and mentor engineers.
• Experience with AI tools, LLM orchestration, and multimodal interfaces.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and maintain full-stack features.
• Build frontend experiences in Next.js/React and develop streaming chat interfaces.
• Architect backend services, APIs, and integrations with PostgreSQL, Redis, Pinecone, and Contentful.
• Monitor AI performance KPIs, latency, and TTFT; own service health.
• Lead projects, conduct code reviews, and mentor junior engineers.
• Ship in small increments using feature flags and progressive rollouts.
• Leverage Datadog, Sentry, and LangSmith for monitoring and analytics.
