Job summary

Bonterra is seeking an experienced software engineer to design and build full-stack features across backend services and frontend applications. You will work with a collaborative team that values creativity, autonomy, and continuous growth, delivering impactful solutions for nonprofits.

You will contribute to UI/UX, evaluate tradeoffs, own your work end-to-end, and actively use AI coding assistants to enhance productivity and client value.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of full-stack JavaScript/TypeScript development on production systems.
• Strong React experience including component architecture, state management, and performance.
• Solid backend experience with Node.js and TypeScript, including building and maintaining production APIs and services.
• Solid grasp of REST APIs and GraphQL on both sides of the wire.
• Production experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices using GitHub Actions, CircleCI, or similar.
• Comfortable working in AWS or a comparable cloud environment.
• Strong problem solving skills, high EQ, and the ability to communicate and collaborate well across a team.
• Active daily use of AI coding assistants like Copilot, Cursor, or Claude.

Responsibilities

• Design and build thoughtful, reliable features across the full stack.
• Work on backend services and APIs as much as the frontend.
• Bring strong UI and UX sensibility to frontend work.
• Proactively evaluate tradeoffs and communicate value to clients.
• Own your work from planning to review and demo.
• Use AI tools as a normal part of how you work.
• Think about where AI can create real value for clients and shape features.
• Partner with product managers, designers, and QA to ship what users want.
• Give and receive code reviews to improve the team.
• Share knowledge and grow together.
