Job summary

Bonterra is hiring for a mission-driven engineer to help nonprofits with AI-powered software. You will design, build, and scale full-stack features across backend services and frontend interfaces, partnering with product, design, and QA to ship meaningful solutions.

You will work with React, Node.js, TypeScript, and cloud technologies in a collaborative team that embraces AI-assisted development. This is a full-time role based in the United States, with compensation aligned to market rates.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of full-stack JavaScript/TypeScript development on production systems.
• Strong React experience including component architecture, state management, and performance.
• Solid backend experience with Node.js and TypeScript, including building and maintaining production APIs and services.
• Solid grasp of REST APIs and GraphQL on both sides of the wire.
• Production experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices using GitHub Actions, CircleCI, or similar.
• Comfortable working in AWS or a comparable cloud environment.
• Strong problem solving skills, high EQ, and the ability to communicate and collaborate well across a team.
• Active daily use of AI coding assistants like Copilot, Cursor, or Claude. This is expected, not optional.

Responsibilities

• Design and build full-stack features across backend, APIs and frontend.
• Bring strong UI and UX sensibility to frontend work and performance.
• Proactively evaluate tradeoffs with a focus on business value and client impact.
• Own your work from sprint planning and ticket refinement through implementation, peer review, and demo.
• Use AI tools as a normal part of development, debugging, and research.
• Think critically about where AI adds real value for clients and features.
• Partner with product managers, designers, and QA to ship useful features.
• Give and receive code reviews that uplift the team and product quality.
• Share knowledge to help the team grow.
