Job summary

athenahealth is seeking a Principal Frontend Engineer to shape architecture for a large React-based frontend platform in a hybrid role based in Boston, MA. You will drive standards, performance, and cross-team alignment across Clinicals applications while partnering with product and security teams.

You will lead modernization, evolve data access contracts with GraphQL/REST, mentor engineers, and influence long-term roadmap decisions that impact patient care software used daily.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS/Software Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 10–15 years of professional software engineering experience with frontend architecture at scale.
• Deep expertise in React.js, including advanced state management and large-scale component library development.
• Strong proficiency in Node.js for build tooling, SSR, and frontend-adjacent service design.
• Demonstrated experience with GraphQL and data access patterns across a frontend platform.
• Exposure to Oracle, AWS, Jenkins, Harness; CI/CD experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Establish frontend engineering standards, architectural patterns, and component conventions across Clinicals teams.
• Define and govern frontend data access via GraphQL and RESTful APIs for consistency and reliability.
• Drive multi-year frontend modernization roadmap including migration strategy and risk management.
• Mentor Lead/Senior engineers and build team capability and culture.
• Evaluate AI-assisted development tooling and guide responsible adoption.
• Lead cross-team technical reviews and architectural decision-making with documentation.
• Address technical debt and performance bottlenecks across the frontend codebase.
• Represent frontend engineering in planning and platform investment discussions.
