Job summary

Umbra in Reston, VA seeks a Flight Software Engineer to design, implement, and test embedded flight software for space missions using Rust. You will lead integration, testing, and documentation while mentoring teammates.

The role emphasizes Rust/C++ on embedded ARM, Linux/RTOS environments, and strong collaboration with hardware teams. Occasional travel may be required, and the team operates on-site in Reston, VA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.
• 3+ years of high-reliability software development with Rust or C/C++.
• 1+ years developing concurrent code with asynchronous Rust.
• 3+ years of embedded software development with Rust or C/C++.
• Experience on embedded ARM cores under Linux, RTOS, or bare-metal.
• Strong understanding of processor architecture and performance/memory optimization.
• Experience leading software development processes (version control, CI/CD, bug tracking, design docs).

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to design, develop, and maintain fault-tolerant flight and payload software.
• Implement software to meet requirements and interface with spacecraft subsystems and ground hardware.
• Develop command/control software for spacecraft flight operations and payloads.
• Participate in test campaigns from unit to system level.
• Create and maintain documentation for software operation and interfaces.
• Provide mentorship and code reviews; oversee integration with flight hardware.
