Job summary

Umbra is seeking a Senior/Staff Flight Software Engineer to support Mission Solutions by developing requirements, software architecture, and flight software for spacecraft, and to oversee integration and testing.

You will provide expert guidance in software design, code development, peer reviews, and documentation, ensuring seamless integration with flight hardware. This on-site role is based in Reston, VA or Arlington, VA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
• 8+ years of professional experience developing high-reliability software systems.
• 5+ years developing concurrent and asynchronous software.
• Active TS/SCI security clearance.
• Experience leading software development for a satellite bus or spacecraft platform.
• Experience across the full software development lifecycle (requirements, design, implementation, integration, debugging, testing, maintenance).
• Strong embedded software development with Rust and/or C/C++.
• Experience developing software for SoC-based architectures in Linux.
• Knowledge of Ethernet, TCP/IP, IPsec.
• Experience implementing cybersecurity requirements and NSA-approved crypto.
• Willing to travel 10-20%.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain fault-tolerant flight and payload software.
• Architect and implement software to meet system requirements and interfaces with subsystems and ground hardware.
• Create and maintain documentation for software operation and interfaces.
• Develop & test command and control software for spacecraft flight operations.
• Participate in test campaigns from unit to system level.
• Present high-level technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
• Take on additional professional duties as assigned.
