Job summary

Cumberland Farms in Westborough, MA, is seeking a Senior Diesel Mechanic Technician to maintain and repair a diverse fleet, including Class 8 trucks and tank trailers. You’ll diagnose mechanical and electrical issues, follow DOT and safety regulations, and coordinate with vendors.

A strong background in diesel repair and relevant certifications are preferred. The role offers a four-day, ten-hour shift, competitive wages, and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5 years of heavy-duty truck maintenance experience on Class 8 diesel trucks.
• Experience servicing MC406 petroleum tank trailers or similar hazardous cargo tanks.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic software and testing equipment.
• Familiarity with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA and hazardous materials regulations.
• Valid CDL preferred or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on Class 8 trucks and trailers.
• Manage daily operations of your shift with minimal supervision.
• Maintain preventive maintenance schedules to maximize reliability and minimize downtime.
• Ensure equipment complies with applicable regulations and safety standards.

Position Summary

The Senior Diesel Mechanic Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and inspection of the vehicles and equipment within the fleet. This role requires a strong understanding of specialized methods and technical requirements, as well as the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues required to maintain our diverse fleet. The Senior Diesel Mechanic Technician will ensure that all vehicles are safe, reliable, and compliant with industry standards. At Cumberland Farms you’ll be exposed to our diverse fleet. You may work on (but not limited to) the following equipment: PACCAR, Hino, Carrier, Thermo King, Great Dane and Hyundai.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on Class 8 trucks, MC406 petroleum tank trailers and refrigeration trailers.
• Able to manage all daily operations of your dedicated shift with little to no supervision.
• Maintain preventive maintenance schedules to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
• Ensure all equipment complies with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, and applicable hazardous materials and FSMA regulations.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain petroleum tank trailer components, including valves, vapor recovery systems, emergency shutoffs, and loading/unloading equipment.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain refrigerated trailer components, reefer units, tailgates, ramps door components.
• Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, steering, electrical systems, air systems, and hydraulic components.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair histories, inspection documentation and parts usage.
• Coordinate with vendors and outside repair facilities when specialized repairs are required.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
• Respond to emergency roadside breakdowns and prioritize repairs to minimize operational disruptions.
• Recommend equipment replacements, and maintenance strategies to improve fleet performance and reduce operating costs.

Working Relationships

Daily interaction with driver managers, drivers, outside vendors, logistics team, fleet technicians and management personnel

Requirements

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education

Graduate of a Technical Institute with primary focus in diesel engine repair.

Minimum Experience

• Minimum of 3-5 years of heavy-duty truck maintenance experience, with experience maintaining Class 8 diesel trucks.
• Experience servicing MC406 petroleum tank trailers or similar hazardous materials cargo tanks.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, electrical diagnostics, emissions systems, and trailer repair.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic software and testing equipment.

Preferred Experience

• Thorough understanding of DOT, FMCSA, cargo tank inspection, and hazardous materials regulations
• Welding and fabrication experience
• Valid CDL (or ability to obtain one)
• Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Licenses/Certifications

ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certification. DOT Inspector Certification (preferred). Brake Inspector Certification. Tank Trailer Maintenance or Inspection Certification (preferred). Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) required.

Soft Skills/Competencies

Ability to multi-task, prioritize, problem solving and decision-making skills. Strong organizational and time management skills.

Travel

Occasional travel to other company maintenance facilities for training or coverage

Hours & Conditions

Four-day, ten-hour shift schedule to include one weekend day. Holidays required when falling on a scheduled workday

Physical Requirements

Walk/stand on concrete. Bend, stoop, crouch, kneel and crawl to repair units. Reach below and above shoulder height to repair units. Use of hand power and air tools is required. Climb, stand and balance on ladders or units to perform repairs. Insert hands into confined areas to repair units. Work above shoulders in cervical extension from stand, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel. Work under units while they are on hoist or shop floor. Able to lift 75lbs.
