ERG Fire Protection Engineer Job Description

ERG is a research and consulting firm supporting federal, state, and commercial clients with multidisciplinary teams skilled in engineering, science, economics, public health, IT, and communications. We seek highly motivated individuals with the ability to prioritize, perform, and communicate effectively in a fast-paced environment.

We are looking for fire protection engineers experienced in supporting operations and maintenance of fire protection systems (FPS) for high-hazard areas, such as chemical processing or explosives storage facilities. This full-time position is located at a federal site in Indian Head, Maryland, working closely with teams of engineers and technicians managing fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems.

The role involves interaction with ERG personnel at the federal site, as well as from our Chantilly and Arlington offices. Indian Head is approximately 30 miles from Washington, DC, 25 miles from Alexandria, VA, and 60 miles from Fredericksburg, VA. Alternative work schedules may be considered.

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Plan, implement, or monitor preventive maintenance programs (inspections, testing, maintenance) complying with federal, local, and industry standards.
  2. Provide engineering support for documenting and troubleshooting FPS operational issues.
  3. Proactively identify and resolve compliance issues.
  4. Document and develop requirements for capital improvement projects through site visits, condition assessments, and cost estimates.
  5. Review fire protection design for facility improvement projects by third-party firms.
  6. Develop or review test plans for FPS modifications.
  7. Assist with planning and scheduling testing activities.
  8. Analyze and recommend fire protection requirements based on space utilization studies and forecasts.
  9. Evaluate existing operations to identify cost-saving or efficiency improvements.
  10. Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  11. Serve as project manager on select projects.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • At least eight years of relevant experience with a fire protection engineering degree, or ten years with another engineering discipline.
  • Experience with NFPA standards (NFPA 1, 101, 13, 15, 30, 72).
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience supporting fire alarm and sprinkler system design or O&M, including FPS drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of wet, dry, and pre-action FPS systems.
  • Understanding of life safety compliance in hazardous environments.
  • PE license in Fire Protection Engineering is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Experience with fire safety in high-hazard industrial facilities, DoD fire protection requirements, ultra-high-speed FPS, UV/IR detection technologies, and relevant building codes.
