Job description

The Fire Protection Engineer position is a technical role within the firm focused on project execution for various facility design projects. The Fire Protection Engineer will perform multiple aspects of fire protection engineering services on multi-discipline building design projects, ranging from small to large scopes for commercial and government facilities, as well as single discipline fire protection projects.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  1. Performing all aspects of fire protection design services including conceptual studies, programming, schematic documents, design development documents, and construction documents under supervision.
  2. Working on a multi-discipline design team.
  3. Meeting with clients to prepare and validate scope of work.
  4. Preparation of marketing and presentation materials as directed.
  5. Obtaining guidance from senior staff to resolve technical issues.
  6. Supervising support staff, especially on complex problems.
  7. Participating in bidding and construction phases, including field visits and review of shop drawings.
  8. Ensuring compliance with quality control practices.
  9. Collaborating with management and multidisciplinary teams.
  10. Mentoring junior staff and monitoring their professional development.
Project responsibilities include:
  1. Serving as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer when directed.
  2. Acting as Design Manager on projects.
  3. Preparing scope and fee proposals.
  4. Conducting project code analysis.
  5. Designing fire protection systems and preparing detailed drawings and specifications.
  6. Reviewing calculations and work products of team members.
  7. Coordinating drawings with specifications and other disciplines.
  8. Responding to RFIs and quality control comments.
  9. Adhering to project budgets and schedules.
Qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; a postgraduate degree is preferred.
  • Licensed Fire Protection Engineer in at least one US jurisdiction.
  • Experience in design for federal, state, municipal, healthcare, or similar projects.
  • Proficiency with current software tools and understanding of sustainable design principles is desirable.
  • Additional certifications and active professional organization participation are encouraged.
Physical requirements:

Primarily sedentary work in an office, with site visits to construction sites as needed. Accommodations can be made for disabilities.
