Job summary

The City of Minneapolis is seeking a Fire Inspector I to conduct complex fire and life safety inspections of commercial, industrial, and multi‑unit residential facilities. You will enforce Minneapolis Code of Ordinances and Minnesota State Fire Code, reporting to the Alternative Enforcement Team, Fire Inspection Services, and Vacant Commercial Buildings Team.

This role requires a degree in Fire Science or Building Inspection Technology, one year of related experience, and a state fire

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Fire Science or Building Inspection Technology or equivalent.
• One year of related experience in fire code, building code, or fire prevention.
• Minnesota State Fire Certification First Responder Inspector or equivalent within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Inspect buildings to identify fire hazards and determine code compliance for permits, renewals and licenses.
• Perform fire and life safety inspections of new and existing structures for construction, occupancy, fire protection and exposures.
• Investigate complaints and nuisance conditions to document, initiate processes and resolve issues.
• Re-inspect buildings for code compliance and initiate penalties for non-compliance.
• Document inspections and prepare letters and reports as required.
• Maintain workspace and respond to customers and management communications in a timely manner.
