Job summary

American Electric Power seeks an Assistant General Counsel / Senior Counsel, FERC to lead significant federal energy regulatory matters before FERC and regional bodies. The role develops strategy, drafts filings, and advocates positions while coordinating with internal teams and outside counsel.

You will manage complex rate matters, tariff issues, and interconnection proceedings, with opportunities to impact transmission and wholesale markets across multiple regions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctorate.
• Active license to practice law in state in which position is located.
• FERC-related legal experience preferred with a law firm, corporate legal department, or regulatory body.

Responsibilities

• Represent AEP in complex FERC proceedings and disputes involving transmission rates and service, regional planning and cost allocation, interconnection, wholesale market design, and related matters under the Federal Power Act.
• Develop and execute legal/regulatory strategy from issue identification through resolution; prepare comments, protests, briefs, testimony, and other filings; advocate AEP’s positions in contested proceedings and rulemakings.
• Represent AEP in PJM, SPP and MISO stakeholder processes; work with FERC and RTO Policy teams and business leaders to shape outcomes on transmission, markets, planning, reliability, and large-load issues.
• Provide business-oriented advice to AEP’s various teams regarding FERC jurisdiction, RTO tariffs, transmission service, interconnection, rates, compliance, and state-federal issues.
• Lead the FERC-regulatory workstream for major corporate initiatives, including transactions and investments; coordinate with outside counsel and internal teams.
