Job summary

Brooks Insurance Agency is seeking an experienced Excess Liability Insurance Underwriter in the US. The role focuses on risk selection, disciplined pricing, and portfolio profitability across diverse target classes within delegated authority.

The candidate will work with wholesale brokers and carrier teams to communicate decisions clearly, document analyses, and maintain regulatory compliance in surplus lines operations.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in excess casualty or surplus lines underwriting.
• Experience making binding underwriting decisions within a delegated authority framework.
• Strong knowledge of E&S coverage structures, attachment points, and pricing methodology.
• Ability to analyze complex risk submissions, loss data, and exposure information to reach sound underwriting conclusions.
• Solid understanding of surplus lines regulations and E&S market placement.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with underwriting platforms and productivity software.

Responsibilities

• Analyze complex excess casualty submissions, including underlying programs and exposure data.
• Evaluate risks across target classes including contracting, product liability, real estate, and institutional exposures.
• Underwrite E&S submissions that fall outside standard market appetite.
• Make binding decisions on new business, renewals, and endorsements within delegated authority.
• Determine coverage structures, attachment points, limits, terms, and endorsements per guidelines.
• Refer risks outside authority to senior leadership with clear recommendations.
• Apply surplus lines regulatory knowledge in structuring placements.
• Maintain profitable book by disciplined risk selection and applying guidelines.
• Monitor loss trends and market conditions to adjust strategies.
• Collaborate with carrier actuarial teams to refine pricing models.
• Identify portfolio concerns and shifts to leadership; participate in audits.
• Provide brokerage guidance on risk characteristics and submission requirements.
• Represent the carrier at industry events and broker meetings.
• Prepare clear underwriting files documenting basis for decisions.
• Ensure compliance with surplus lines regulations and internal policies.
