Job summary

Okaloosa County Inc. is seeking a hands-on maintenance technician to support the Destin Fort Walton Beach Convention Center. You will transport and set up event equipment, manage audio/visual systems, and ensure electrical, HVAC and lighting needs are met per event orders.

You will train co-workers, review event orders for billing, and coordinate repairs with facilities staff. A high school diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience are required; valid driver's license preferred.

Job description

Provides event preparation, support services, and facility and grounds maintenance services to the Destin Fort Walton Beach Convention Center.

  • Transports event related equipment to and from events.
  • Sets up event related equipment according to detailed diagrams, equipment listings and specific instructions contained in event orders to include securing and connecting telecommunication wires, power panels, and other operational wiring needs as well as audio/visual/lightning needs for events and functions.
  • Maintains and operates all video, audio and lighting equipment to provide presentations or special effects during events using a script or cues provided by client.
  • Attends pre-event planning conferences with Event Coordinators, clients and contracted audio/video providers; offers technical advice, coordinates requirements and productions.
  • Provides clients with instruction and demonstration of how to use house equipment during events.
  • Provides computer related technical support to clients.
  • Performs post-event break down tasks, from removing trash and cleaning floors/carpet to helping schedule and oversee contract labor used for events.
  • Reviews event order documents to confirm/update final billing.
  • Recommends equipment upgrades and procurements to remain current with evolving technology to ensure products and services offered meet industry standards.
  • Operates motorized equipment and vehicles (i.e., grounds maintenance equipment, material handling equipment, and portable power tools.)
  • Monitors, manipulates, and assesses areas of electrical, HVAC, plumbing and structural surfaces within the Convention Center to include adjusting and monitoring computer-based HVAC system settings within the Convention Center as well coordinating necessary repairs with the Facility & Parks Maintenance Department.
  • Maintains, modifies, and repairs grounds by cleaning, planting, fertilizing, sprinkling, mowing, weeding and pruning as well as the related irrigation systems.
  • Provides training and instruction to co-workers in proper use, preventative maintenance, and repair of facility equipment and structures.
  • Directs and oversees co-workers in the absence of the Event Operations Supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Training, and Experience:

High School diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in the area of general maintenance, including servicing and minor repair of electrical systems, plumbing systems, HVAC systems and structural surfaces; set up, maintenance and minor repair of electronic equipment, audio visual equipment, sound boards and lighting systems, and custodial; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Demonstrated working knowledge and proficiency with staging equipment, audio/visual equipment, and lighting equipment required. Experience in a lead capacity is preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

Requires a valid driver license.

Physical Requirements:

This position must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including trucks, light equipment, and a variety of hand-held electrical equipment and tools and perform manual labor. Must be able to exert from 25 to in excess of 100 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Requires full range of body motion in manipulation of limbs and torso for working on scaffolding, climbing ladders and working in confined spaces. Requires bending, stooping and twisting. Must be able to tolerate remaining on feet for extended periods of time. This position must be able to work for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work.

Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record and exchange information; requires the ability to explain procedures and to give, receive and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to read and interpret a variety of moderately complex technical data, policy and procedure manuals, codes, professional journals. Requires the ability to prepare forms and reports using prescribed formats, and adhering to all rules of grammar, spelling, diction and punctuation. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical and/or professional languages used within the parameters of the job and with a broad array of individuals from various professional backgrounds.

Intelligence:

Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.

Numerical Aptitude:

Must be able to add and subtract; may require the ability to multiply and divide.

Interpersonal Temperament:

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate levels of stress, imposed by frequent deadlines, peak workloads, or public contact. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
