Job summary

The University of Michigan is seeking an experienced Environmental Health & Safety Specialist Senior to support environmental compliance, due diligence, site assessments, investigations, remediation, and permitting across university properties and projects.

This role works with design and construction teams and external consultants; it requires strong regulatory knowledge, project management, and the ability to respond to emergencies after hours with a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, geological sciences, or related field.
• 3–5 years coordinating environmental projects or programs.
• Knowledge of federal and state environmental laws, esp. NREPA Act 451, Part 201/213.
• Experience with project management: consultant supervision, budgeting, scheduling.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with data management and Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Ability to pass a physical exam for emergency response and PPE use.
• Willingness to respond to emergencies after hours.

Responsibilities

• Develop and manage environmental site assessments, investigations, and remediation.
• Attend project and design meetings to support environmental initiatives through design and construction.
• Assist with environmental consultant management: RFPs, contractor selection, terms, schedules, budgets.
• Collect groundwater, surface water, stormwater, soil, and other samples for analysis.
• Review plans for development to ensure due care for contaminated media.
• Coordinate with landfills for waste disposal profiles and manifests.
• Prepare periodic reports, technical documents, and articles.
• Support due diligence activities for property acquisitions, incl. Phase I/II and BEAs.
• Submit BEAs to the Michigan EGLE on behalf of the University.
