Job summary

The Maryland Department of the Environment is seeking a Deputy Program Manager to oversee the Compliance Program across multiple environmental areas, including industrial pretreatment, NPDES/state discharge permits, wetlands, sediment control, and stormwater approvals.

Responsibilities include developing compliance policies, managing sensitive enforcement matters, and supervising a diverse workforce while overseeing day-to-day operations and procurement processes.

Qualifications

• Six (6) years of experience supervising a professional staff in an environmental field or experience as an environmental project manager including assigning tasks, setting priorities, and reviewing work products.
• Professional or scientific experience related to natural resources, environment or public health may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for education.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer may be substituted for the required education.
• One additional year of experience in professional scientific, natural resources, or environmental or public health may be substituted for the 30 specialized academic credits.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement compliance policies for the program.
• Negotiate enforcement actions with clients and/or violators.
• Supervise a large and diverse workforce within the program.
• Oversee day-to-day program activities including requisitions and procurements.
• Drive a State vehicle as part of the job responsibilities.
