Purpose of the Job

The Senior Engineering Specialist is responsible for ensuring our products meet our customers' exact requirements and that our processes are capable and consistent. This position will develop, design, coordinate, and execute experiments and trials that will increase understanding of FG processes and improve plant performance. They will focus on utilizing loss trees to initiate and implement technical improvements, solve technical problems, and assess process capability throughout the plant. They will also provide leadership to other Manufacturing Engineers and Manufacturing Leadership Program candidates within the department.

Job Responsibilities

  • Build and foster an "incident-free" safety culture among all employees.
  • Utilize technical knowledge to provide a safe and secure work environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Ensure all practices and procedures within the Engineer's control are safe, environmentally compliant, and permit compliant.
  • Lead and support safety initiatives and processes to drive towards zero safety incidents.
Technical Excellence and Process Optimization
  • Understand current manufacturing process capability to support the drive to reduce variation, to ensure product quality, and consistency and thereby improve the overall customer experience.
  • Effectively communicate objectives holding people accountable to deliver results.
  • Network/partner with peers to operate with zero environmental non-conformities maintain compliance to applicable company, government, and regulatory policies.
  • Promote a data-driven approach to all process and quality related problems.
  • Identify and lead new process improvements.
  • Facilitate process and quality related training to ensure understanding of customer requirements, process variables, SPC, procedures and practices, ISO management systems (as applicable) for all employees in the plant.
  • Aid in the implementation and integration of all new process equipment to ensure data streams and setup are complete.
  • Develop, evaluate, improve, and document manufacturing processes/controls.
  • Demonstrate ability to develop and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization and to technically contribute to the development of the process solutions.
  • Demonstrate strong data analysis skills, apply statistical methods/data analytics to estimate future manufacturing requirements.
  • Utilize capital execution from inception to completion for process/technical improvements.
  • Understand current manufacturing process capability, drives to reduce variation, and ensures product quality and consistency to improve the overall customer experience.
  • Develop a succession plan to replace the Technical Lead.
  • Facilitates quality related training with Quality Manager (includes understanding customer requirements translated to process variables, SPC, procedures and practices, ISO Management systems) for all employees in the plant.
Core Objectives
  • Help deliver plant productivity goals by improving operating stability.
  • Create a management system for new process control systems (atmospheric sensing, bun growth modeling, bun shape control, etc.)
  • Create training documentation for new systems.
  • Improve capture of the knowledge base in the plant.
  • Create systems to improve visibility to sustainability goals within the process.
  • Use various TPM tools to drive improved productivity and plant performance and build a TPM culture.
  • Create an environment where all employees are engaged, empowered, and focused on serving our customers.
  • Develop relationships with customers and understand what it takes to ensure OC manufactures products that they define as high quality and participate in developing solutions for serving our customers.
  • Act as Development Coach for MLPs and interns, creating the appropriate developmental experience and assuring the program outcome is achieved.
Leading and Developing Talent
  • Create and sustain a culture where talent is developed through effective technical training and provide appropriate feedback on individual performance and talent evaluation.
  • Plan, promote and organize training activities to constantly elevate the capabilities of our employees.
  • Act as Development Coach for MLPs and Interns, creating the appropriate developmental experience and assuring the program outcome is achieved.
  • Help create an environment where all employees are engaged, empowered, and focused on serving our customers.
  • Use various TPM tools to drive improved productivity and plant performance and build a TPM culture.
Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications/Experience
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Glass Technology, Ceramic, Chemistry, Physics or related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years of process engineering experience in a heavy process industry or related industry experience.
  • Experience writing standard operating procedures, work instructions and experimental evaluations.
  • Experience with handling complex sets of data and organizing them for analysis.
Preferred Experience
  • TPM experience; FI, QM, AM
  • Willingness to relocate for future growth opportunities.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt and/or Lean Manufacturing experience
  • Experience driving change management initiatives.
  • Development and leadership of process improvement plans.
  • Training and development of junior engineers, operators, and other staff members.
  • Experience in a union environment.
