Responsibilities

  • Ensures compliance with City Engineering Design and Construction Standards.
  • Documents inspections and project activity daily using EnerGov.
  • Coordinates with developers, contractors, engineers, and stakeholders across construction phases.
  • Conducts testing of roadways, fire lanes, and utilities to ensure standards.
  • Coordinates road closures and verifies permits per MUTCD standards.
  • Oversees acceptance of public infrastructure and warranty inspections.
  • Reviews and approves as-built drawings from engineering firms.
  • Interprets codes and standards related to transportation and utilities.
  • Collaborates with City departments to meet development requirements.

About Us:

The Transportation Infrastructure Inspections Unit is responsible for overseeing construction activities within public rights-of-way and easements. The unit ensures that all work performed by contractors complies with City standards and safety regulations while promoting timely and efficient project completion.

The Senior Infrastructure Inspector performs advanced technical inspection work and serves as a key liaison between the City, developers, contractors, and engineers to ensure infrastructure is constructed in accordance with approved plans, standards, and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Performs technical inspections of infrastructure within the public right-of-way, including potable water, reclaimed water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, roadways, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and associated appurtenances
  • Ensures compliance with City Engineering Design and Construction Standards and approved construction drawings
  • Documents inspections, permits, and project activity using EnerGov on a daily basis
  • Coordinates and communicate with developers, contractors, engineers, and project stakeholders throughout all phases of construction, including preconstruction meetings, inspections, punch lists, and final acceptance
  • Conducts and verify testing of roadways, fire lanes, and utility systems to ensure compliance with applicable standards
  • Coordinates road closures and verify permits in accordance with MUTCD standards
  • Tracks development projects and oversee acceptance of public infrastructure constructed by private developers, including warranty inspections and resolution of deficiencies
  • Reviews and approve as-built drawings submitted by engineering firms
  • Interprets and apply codes, standards, and ordinances related to transportation, utilities, and land development
  • Coordinates with other City departments to ensure all development requirements are met
  • Provides customer service and technical guidance to developers, engineers, and the public
  • Attends meetings and contribute to team coordination and workload management
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience:

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and 3 to 5 years’ experience in construction, construction inspection, or related work

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Work Zone Certification
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with ArcGIS, iMaps, and EnerGov
  • Certification in QMS Roadway and/or ACI Concrete Grade 1
