Senior Energy Storage Engineer – Power (Multiple Locations)

Join Burns & McDonnell as a Senior Energy Storage Engineer. Burns & McDonnell’s Energy Storage team offers storage solutions that take clients from project conception, siting and permitting to turnkey design, construction, and startup.

BURNS & MCDONNELL offers fully integrated turnkey solutions in the energy storage industry with expertise in lithium‑ion, flow, and mechanical storage systems.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate energy storage technology and provide guidance to clients on the most suitable technology.
  • Perform marketing, project development, and proposal development for energy storage projects.
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients or outside personnel.
  • Develop scope of work, conceptual design, and execution plans.
  • Prepare engineering cost and man‑hour estimates and schedules.
  • Perform project management duties on energy storage consulting projects.
  • Perform lead engineer duties on multi‑discipline energy storage construction projects.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, instruction, and mentorship to less experienced team members.
  • Prepare or direct the creation of construction documents for installation of electrical systems.
  • Develop or direct creation of equipment specifications, procurement and factory acceptance testing of batteries, inverters, battery enclosures, and other equipment.
  • Coordinate project design assignments and design teams locally and with other office locations.
  • Provide guidance and field engineering support to construction and startup personnel during construction and commissioning.
  • Position requires approximately 20% travel to client offices and field project sites; some travel may be overseas.
  • Previous progressive design and management experience demonstrating knowledge of construction and commissioning of engineered designs.
  • Experience with design scope development, budget preparation, project execution, meeting schedule requirements and maintaining budgets.
  • Capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments.
  • Capable of interpreting and developing solutions to complex problems.
  • Other duties will be assigned as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • OR Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering is a plus.
  • 7 years electrical engineering experience; EPC project experience preferred.
  • Professional Engineering License (PE) preferred.
  • Experience with energy storage in utility‑scale and/or large industrial facilities, including battery technology/chemistry selection, battery sizing, one‑line development, site arrangement, inverter selection, cable ampacity calculations, grounding, protective relaying, and associated systems design and construction administration.
  • Software experience utilizing SKM Power Tools, ETAP, or similar software.
  • Field construction and commissioning experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, strong analytical and problem‑solving skills required.
  • Previous consulting engineering experience preferred.
  • Ability to travel.

Schedule: Full‑time
Travel: Yes – 25% of the time.
