Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer
Mid-Atlantic (Hybrid/Remote)
About the organization

MD Energy Advisors (MDEA) is a rapidly growing energy advisory and program management firm partnering with utilities, federal agencies, and institutional clients to deliver complex energy and infrastructure solutions.

We are increasingly focused on building a differentiated platform serving colleges and universities nationwide — helping institutions navigate energy strategy, capital planning, decarbonization, and modernization of infrastructure and controls.

Our approach goes beyond traditional engineering or ESCO delivery. We position ourselves as trusted advisors, guiding clients from strategy through execution.

About the opportunity

MDEA is seeking a Senior Energy Engineer to serve as a key technical leader operating across the firm’s Higher Education and Federal energy portfolios.

This is a highly cross-functional role that sits at the intersection of engineering, program delivery, and strategic advisory. The engineer will partner closely with leaders across the organization — including Strategic Projects, Commercial Solutions, and Utility Solutions — to support the development and execution of complex, resilient, forward-looking energy initiatives.

The role will play a critical part in advancing MDEA’s position as a trusted energy advisor to colleges and universities, while also ensuring technical rigor across federal and utility programs, including Utility Energy Service Contracts.

The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in building systems and energy engineering; working knowledge of new energy-saving technologies and practices; experience helping clients develop energy and resilience strategies; and the ability to operate in multi-stakeholder environments involving utilities, ESCOs, federal agencies, and institutional clients. This individual should be comfortable moving between detailed technical analysis and broader program-level discussions, helping translate engineering insight into actionable strategy.

Success in this role requires the ability to
  • Collaborate across internal teams to align technical, financial, and strategic objectives
  • Navigate the nuances of federal programs and higher education institutions
  • Support both project-level execution and portfolio-level thinking
  • Think creatively about energy conservation strategy and infrastructure, with an eye to emerging technologies and durable long-term results
  • Contribute to building repeatable, scalable delivery models across MDEA’s service offerings
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform onsite assessments of client facilities to identify energy saving opportunities and meet with facilities personnel to ascertain onsite issues
  • Analyze existing building systems and collect data on building operation, HVAC, electrical, lighting, and controls to determine energy usage and efficiency
  • Develop engineering solutions to address current facility issues and potential energy saving opportunities
  • Stay abreast of new developments in strategy, controls, and standing equipment that serve energy efficiency and resilience
  • Establish priorities for implementation of capital projects and energy efficiency measures
  • Lead and direct the work of engineering team, consult external engineers, and equipment suppliers; coordinate tasks, manage schedules, and ensure deliverables and deadlines are met
  • Coordinate with Implementation Team and subcontractors to finalize design and confirm feasibility of installation
  • Review and verify energy savings calculations and guide other staff in the best practices for various energy savings technologies, including lighting, HVAC, fans, pumps, air compression, and industrial process use; Complete technical and financial analyses to include ROI assessments
  • Plan and deliver presentations at meetings and training events for trade allies and customers, clients, and others
  • Perform site-specific engineering analysis and evaluation of energy efficiency projects and programs involving industrial process equipment, such as pumps, fans and compressed air systems, complex central plant systems and advanced HVAC equipment
  • Provide expert judgment and analyses for engineering design in order to ensure owner's requirements are fully documented, minimize first cost, improve energy efficiencies, ensure standards are met and coordinate electrical and control requirements
  • Write and install energy management routines for building automation systems
