Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a seasoned EMI/EMC Engineer to collaborate with cross-functional Engineering teams, leading design trades for rover-related avionics systems. You will analyze grounding, shielding, and RF compatibility, troubleshoot EMI issues, and operate lab test equipment to support spacecraft integration.

The role emphasizes MIL-STD-461 compliance, SMC-S-016 testing, and high-power avionics experience including LDOs and power converters.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM).
• 5+ years in EMI/EMC design, analysis, and testing for spacecraft or avionics.
• Experience with LTSpice and circuit analysis using Spice or equivalents.
• Proficient with oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, and logic analyzers.
• Familiarity with SMC-S-016 testing requirements and electrical safety standards.
• MIL-STD-461 experience across EMC test standards.
• Knowledge of high power avionics, LDOs, buck/boost converters, and grounding schemes.
• Experience in motor controller design for BLDC/PMSM in various voltages.
• Ability to read schematics, PCB layouts, drawings, BOMs, and CAD data.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Engineering to capture requirements and lead EMI/EMC design trades for rover systems.
• Contribute to avionics and electro-mechanical subsystems from system to component level.
• Analyze grounding, bonding, shielding, emissions and susceptibility, and RF compatibility.
• Troubleshoot EMI issues from board to system level.
• Operate EMI, RF, and electronics test equipment for development and EMC testing.
• Create and update technical documentation including diagrams, procedures, and reports.
• Support flight hardware qualification and spacecraft integration testing, and risk management.

Job description

• Collaborate with cross-functional Engineering teams to capture requirements, lead EMI/EMC design trades, and integrate designs into rover systems
• Contribute to avionics and electro-mechanical systems and subsystems from system to component level, focusing on E3 design criteria and operational/survivability requirements
• Analyze grounding architectures, structural electrical bonding, circuit isolation, shielding effectiveness, radiated/conducted emissions and susceptibility, near-/far-field electromagnetics, transient protection, signal and power integrity, and RF compatibility
• Troubleshoot EMI issues from board to system level
• Operate and automate EMI, RF, and electronics test equipment within avionics development and in-house EMC testing
• Create and update technical documentation, including command media, system diagrams, schematics, interface control documents, procedures, work/build orders, vendor and payload requirements, and test/anomaly reports
• Support flight hardware qualification and spacecraft integration testing, including production issue dispositions, failure troubleshooting, and spacecraft risk management

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) related field
• 5+ years of experience in EMI/EMC requirements, analysis, design, and testing for spacecraft systems and/or avionics component design (academic and personal projects apply)
• Experience with Analytics/Modeling/Simulation tools such as LTSpice, and experience with electrical circuit analysis using simulation tools such as Spice or equivalent
• Experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, logic analyzers, etc.
• Familiarity with SMC-S-016 testing requirements, and testing per SMC-S-016
• Knowledge of electrical safety and EMC commercial compliance standards and/or testing
• MIL-STD-461 experience across the full range of EMC test standards
• Experience in high power avionics system designs for spacecraft, including LDO regulators, buck/boost converters, power line filters, and spacecraft grounding schemes for high voltage systems
• Experience in motor controller system designs for BLDC and PMSM motors in low- and high-voltage systems
• Ability to read, interpret, and follow circuit schematics, PCB layouts, engineering drawings, BOMs, cable harnesses, wiring schematics, interface diagrams, layout drawings, mechanical drawings, and CAD software
