Job summary

Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Synthes Orthopaedics team seeks a Staff Software Engineer, R&D, based in Raynham, MA or Palm Beach Gardens, FL. You will lead embedded software architecture for safety-critical medical devices and collaborate across systems, electrical, mechanical, and regulatory engineering.

You will develop in C/C++ and Python, drive the software lifecycle, and mentor external contributors while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 8+ years of relevant experience; Master's 6+ years; PhD 4+ years is acceptable.
• Strong software in C/C++, Python for automation, testing or tooling.
• Embedded microcontroller systems with bare‑metal/RTOS and embedded Linux expertise.
• Board bring‑up, hardware/software integration and low‑level debugging.
• Experience with SPI/I2C/UART/CAN/USB/Ethernet/TCP/IP/UDP protocols.
• Experience delivering products through full development lifecycle in regulated environments.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; collaboration across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead embedded software architecture, design, development, integration, and verification.
• Drive all phases of the software lifecycle: requirements, architecture, implementation, testing, and release.
• Provide technical mentorship to internal and external contributors.
• Collaborate with systems, electrical, mechanical, cybersecurity, quality and regulatory teams.
• Oversee software work by external partners; ensure quality and regulatory alignment.
• Lead hardware/software integration, board bring‑up and system level problem solving.
• Evaluate alternatives, balance performance, maintainability, cybersecurity and compliance.
