Job summary

Johnson & Johnson, DePuy Synthes Orthopaedics, seeks a Staff Software Engineer, R&D to design and develop software for electro-mechanical medical devices. The role supports a split base in Raynham, MA or Palm Beach Gardens, FL, with cross-functional collaboration across engineering, quality, regulatory, and product teams.

You will drive software architecture, ensure regulatory compliance, and mentor teams while maintaining high standards of ethics and professionalism in a medical environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with 8+ years (or higher) in relevant field; advanced degrees reduce experience requirement.
• Proven expertise in C/C++ and Python for automation, testing, tooling, or features.
• Experience in embedded microcontroller systems with bare-metal/RTOS development.
• Embedded Linux development including drivers, services, and apps.
• Board bring-up and HW/SW integration with debugging skills.
• Experience with SPI/I2C/UART/CAN/USB/Ethernet/TCP-IP/UDP protocols.
• Delivery of commercial products through full development lifecycle.
• Understanding of software engineering practices, version control, and release processes.
• Experience in regulated design controls and FDA-regulated devices.
• Willingness to work in medical environments such as cadaver labs and ORs.

Responsibilities

• Serve as Software Technical Lead for capital equipment with architecture and delivery responsibility.
• Lead embedded software architecture, design, development, integration, and verification for safety-critical medical devices.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including systems, electrical, mechanical, cybersecurity, quality, and regulatory.
• Develop production software in C/C++ and Python with hands-on leadership.
• Translate requirements into scalable software architectures and detailed designs.
• Drive all phases of software lifecycle from requirements to post-market support.
• Lead HW/SW integration, board bring-up, and root-cause analysis.
• Direct and review work by external partners to ensure quality and regulatory compliance.
• Delegate tasks while maintaining accountability for quality and timelines.
• Evaluate technical options, risks, and make architecture decisions balancing performance and compliance.
• Champion software engineering processes including code reviews, version control, automation, and documentation.
• Provide mentorship to internal and external contributors; represent software in design reviews and regulatory submissions.
• Participate in risk management activities and senior leadership reviews.
