Job summary

NRG Energy is seeking a senior software engineer in Seattle to join the Vivint Smart Home team on a hybrid schedule. The role starts remote and will move to in-office Seattle with a Monday–Thursday on-site pattern and a Friday work-from-home day.

You will apply deep expertise in C, C++, embedded Linux, cross‑compilation, BSP integration, and IoT protocols to bring up hardware, drive drivers, and collaborate across hardware and software teams.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience.
• BS in Computer Engineering, CS, or related field.
• Strong C and modern C++ proficiency.
• Embedded Linux kernel, drivers, boot chain knowledge.
• Build systems with Yocto or Buildroot.
• Hardware debugging with board bring-up, JTAG, scopes.
• BSP integration experience.
• Python or Rust experience.
• IoT protocols like HTTP, MQTT, JSON, Protobufs.
• Linux cross-compiling, unit testing, debugging.

Responsibilities

• Position requires in-office presence in Seattle, WA on a hybrid schedule for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday with a work from home day on Friday.
• The role focuses on developing software for embedded systems in a smart home context, collaborating with hardware and firmware teams.
• Candidates will be evaluating and integrating BSPs, debugging at the hardware/software boundary, and ensuring robust IoT protocol support.
