Blue Origin seeks an Electronics Design Engineer to join the COMSEC team within the Core Systems and Components group. You will design secure communications hardware for space missions, working with Cybersecurity, Software, and FPGA engineers in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities include hardware verification, prototyping, radiation hardening, and mentorship of junior engineers, ensuring compliance with standards and mission requirements.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in electrical hardware design.
  • Experience with high speed digital designs and FPGA-based work.
  • Ability to work with cross‑functional teams including software and cybersecurity.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the design, development, and verification of electrical hardware for secure communications (COMSEC) systems
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Cybersecurity, Software, and FPGA engineering teams throughout the full hardware development lifecycle
  • Perform hands‑on fabrication, assembly, and testing of engineering‑level hardware, including building and modifying wire harnesses, soldering components, and integrating sensor systems for rapid prototyping and troubleshooting.
  • Design for the space environment, applying principles of radiation hardening (TID, SEE) to ensure system reliability.
  • Perform analysis and select components to meet mission radiation requirements.

  • Troubleshoot complex hardware issues across integrated systems and support vehicle‑level testing and launch campaigns.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers
  • Ensure designs meet applicable standards, requirements, and security protocols
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement efforts
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical hardware design
  • Understanding of common circuit analyses (Worst Case Circuit Analysis, Derating, Power Analysis, Timing, etc.).
  • Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB design tools.
  • Experience designing high speed digital systems
  • Strong understanding of designing for the space radiation environment and its effects on electronic components.
  • Experience working with FPGA‑based designs and interfacing with software teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-disciplinary engineering environment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Top Secret security clearance (strongly preferred)
  • Master’s degree in a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with COMSEC or cryptographic hardware design.
  • Familiarity with TEMPEST, NSA, or NIST security standards.
  • Hands‑on experience supporting FIPS 140‑2 or FIPS 140‑3 hardware certification.
  • Working knowledge of designing systems to meet MIL‑STD‑461 and SMC‑S‑016.
  • Experience designing hardware for secure or classified communication systems.
  • Experience supporting space, defense, or aerospace programs.
  • Knowledge of hardware security modules (HSMs) or secure key management systems.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Stock Options for all regular employees (working at least 20 hours/week) Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays. Dependent on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on the company's intent to reward individual contributions and enable them to share in the company's results, or other factors at the company's sole discretion. Base Pay Range

Base Pay Range for: CO applicants is $144,179.00 - $201,849.90 Other site ranges may differ.
