Job summary

PacBio is seeking a Staff/Senior Staff/Principal Electrical Systems Engineer to own instrument system architecture and hardware integration for sequencing platforms. You will design and validate cables, harnesses, mixed-signal boards, and collaborate across firmware, software, mechanical, optics, and manufacturing to deliver robust, scalable instruments.

The role requires leading design reviews, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring regulatory compliance across UL, CE, FCC, and ISO

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Typically requires 7-14+ years with a Bachelor's; 5-12+ with a Master's; 3-11+ with a PhD.
• Hands-on schematic capture and PCB design/layout using Altium, Cadence, or similar EDA tools.
• Experience with USB, CAN, EtherCAT in electronic architectures.
• Experience with suppliers and manufacturing partners on PCB layout and production.
• Demonstrated strength in cable and harness architecture, design, prototyping, and sourcing.
• Strong lab and troubleshooting skills with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, etc.
• Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication to lead technical discussions.

Responsibilities

• Create and maintain instrument system level electronic block diagrams.
• Define, design, document, prototype, and validate cables and wire harnesses; transition to production.
• Design, prototype, bring up, debug, modify, and validate mixed-signal boards with CPUs/FPGA.
• Collaborate with firmware, software, sequencing, mechanical, optical, and other teams to define interfaces.
• Lead system-level troubleshooting and implement design and process improvements for reliability.
• Own electrical performance margins: power integrity, grounding, shielding, EMI/EMC, SI, timing, thermal.
• Plan and lead design reviews; document designs for production with DFx considerations.
• Ensure compliance with UL, CE, FCC/EMC, IEC, FDA, ISO requirements as applicable.
