Job summary

Smurfit Westrock in Evadale, TX seeks a Senior Electrical Reliability Engineer to investigate and resolve complex electrical reliability issues across the mill. You will work closely with Mechanical and Electrical maintenance teams, mill leadership, and external contractors to enhance safety and reliability of electrical assets.

You will lead electrical projects, assist outage planning, and develop effective preventive maintenance programs for low, medium, and high voltage systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering preferred.
• 5+ years of electrical engineering experience in manufacturing.
• Knowledge of safe electrical work practices and industry codes.
• Experience with three-phase systems and motor controls.
• Familiarity with instrumentation, PLCs and controls.
• CMMS experience (e.g., SAP, Passport, JDE).
• Relay coordination and arc flash analysis knowledge preferred.

Responsibilities

• Investigate and resolve electrical reliability issues within the facility.
• Collaborate with maintenance teams and mill leadership to improve safety and reliability.
• Assist outage and shutdown execution as required.
• Lead or support RCA efforts and implement improvements.
• Develop PMs and optimize PDM strategies for electrical equipment.
• Participate in weekend call support on rotation.
• Stay current with NEC, NFPA70E and other electrical standards.

The Opportunity

As the Sr Engineer, Elec Rel, Mill, your primary responsibility is investigating and resolving electrical reliability issues within the facility. Maintain close working interaction with the maintenance Team (Mechanical and Electrical) along with other stakeholders such as Mill Leadership, Production, Corporate Reliability Group (EMS), Key 3rd party contractors (OEM’s consultants, etc.) and SME’s within Smurfit WestRock to identify and resolve safety and reliability opportunities of the electrical assets at the mill. Assist in outage and shutdown execution as required.

How You Will Impact Smurfit WestRock

• Subject Matter Expert, SME for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of critical Electrical Systems and Equipment. Electrical Equipment including Power Generation and distribution, Transformers, Switchgear, Protection Relays, Electrical Switching Low and high voltage motors and starters, UPS and battery charger systems, Variable Frequency Drives/soft Starters, Electrical Actuators, grounding systems, Lighting, Cathodic Protections, Portable Electrical Equipment etc.


• Maintain close working interaction with the maintenance Team (Mechanical and Electrical) along with other stakeholders such as Mill Leadership, Production, Corporate Reliability Group (EMS), Key 3rd party contractors (OEM’s consultants, etc.) and SME within Smurfit WestRock to identify and resolve safety and reliability opportunities of the electrical assets at the mill.


• Provide technical expertise to improve electrical equipment reliability by evaluating and /or redesigning equipment and systems. Work to improve the integrity and reliability of all low, medium, and high voltage electrical installations, systems, and Equipment for the facility. This includes but not limited to reliability improvements by developing engineering solutions to repetitive failures and other issues that adversely affect plant equipment operations, project management and trouble -shooting roles


• Support training Electrical programs for maintenance and operations personnel for safe and reliable operation and maintenance of lant power distribution systems


• Lead or support RCA efforts in areas of expertise and report outs. Compiling recommendations and implementation/close-out and follow-ups


• Support development and optimization of PMs for all the electrical equipment while ensuring the reliability and availability of electrical equipment throughout the facility through the effective PM and PDM strategies to prevent and resolve equipment failures


• Assist outage planning and developing electrical work scopes and execution plans


• Design and implement long-term continuous improvement projects and systems to improve electrical reliability


• Participate in weekend call support on a rotating basis.


• Remain current on electrical standards, techniques, and practices, and thorough understanding of electrical standards (NEC, NFPA70E etc.)


• Experience with synchronous motor maintenance and troubleshooting


• Lead electrical cold mill outage team, including temporary power setup and execution

What You Need To Succeed

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is preferred.


• 5 + years of work experience in electrical engineering in a manufacturing environment


• Knowledge of safe electrical work practices and understanding of industry codes


• Knowledge and experience with three phase electrical systems


• Knowledge of AC and DC electric motors and motor controls and electrical protections schemes


• Knowledge of instrumentation, PLC’s, and controls


• Experience using Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and Outlook as well as familiar with CMMS systems like (SAP, Passport, JDE etc.)


• Knowledge of relay coordination, arc flash hazard and short circuit analysis is preferred
