Job summary

Smurfit Westrock in Delaware Water Gap, PA, is seeking an Engineering Manager to supervise engineering personnel at the Stroudsburg mill. You will ensure safety, deliver quality work, manage capital projects, prepare reports, and support maintenance and start-up of critical equipment.

The role requires strong leadership, financial acumen, and the ability to drive projects in a fast-paced heavy industry setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Paper Science preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in heavy industry.
• Demonstrated ability to execute complex projects in fast paced environments using a team-based, data-driven approach.

• Strong financial acumen with ability to create financial models for project selection and P&L impact.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of Engineering personnel within the mill.

• Provide accurate reports of work execution and respond to emergencies.
• Coordinate maintenance and repair work with operations; on-call coverage as needed.
• Maintain knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and JDE work order system.

The Opportunity:

The Engineering Manager position is responsible for supervising, directing and coordinating the work of Engineering personnel within the mill. The Manager ensures the safety of the workforce, provides quality and efficient execution of assigned work, monitors staff and crew performance, provides problem analysis for equipment history, submits accurate reports of work execution, takes appropriate action in response to emergencies, and administers company policies as they relate to assigned personnel. They also help manage capital projects within the mill.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:

• Administers and models safety in his/her area of responsibility;
• Participates in and enforces the safety program for the maintenance department; reviews safety records to uphold standards of maximum safety for all maintenance employees.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable OSHA and plant safety standards.
• Provides support with capital projects; participating in equipment materials selection and layout to optimize maintainability; promoting consistency by standardizing equipment; providing technical expertise for installation, maintenance procedures and start-up of all new critical equipment; assuring that necessary spare parts are identified and inventory maintained.
• Provides for a process to receive feedback from engineers completing jobs to adjust work plans.
• Communicates directly with the operations department to coordinate maintenance and repair work in process areas.
• Respond to calls 24 hrs/day; provide rotating weekend/holiday on call support.
• Utilizes and maintains JDE system for work order management.
• Maintains and consistently applies a thorough working knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

What you need to succeed:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Paper Science preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in heavy industry.
• Demonstrated ability to execute complex projects in fast paced and dynamic environments using team-based, data-based approach.
• Capability to coach, teach, and mentor technical and non-technical knowledge to hourly and salaried employees to drive business results.
• Strong financial acumen with ability to create financial models used to support project selection and determine net project value to the P&L.
• Driven with a sense of urgency to achieve results.
• Exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills from the shop floor to executive level.
• Skilled decision maker and systematic problem solver.
• Ability to positively influence and persuade others.
• Capable of providing ad-hoc leadership as needed.

Preferred

• Subject matter expert with paper manufacturing or related industry experience
• Experience in change management and organizational redesign.
• Knowledge of both mechanical and electrical components used in industrial applications.
• Knowledge of and or experience in paper mill processes and equipment.
• JDE experience.
