Job description

At HDR, our employee-owners have been fully engaged in creating a welcoming environment where each of us is valued and respected, a place where everyone is empowered to bring their authentic selves and novel ideas to work every day. We foster a culture of inclusion throughout our company and across our communities and constantly ask ourselves: What is our impact on the world?

We bring together mechanical, electrical, structural and civil engineering experts to solve complex design challenges with precision, creativity and collaboration. Whether you are optimizing energy efficiency, integrating resilient systems or engineering the backbone of next‑generation facilities, your contributions will help define the future of the built environment. This role is an opportunity to lead innovation, engineer impact and build a legacy of excellence.

Responsibilities
  • Be a lead for the BES electrical engineering section in the New England region. Primary responsibilities include the design and technical review of facility‑level electrical engineering for medium‑voltage and low‑voltage systems, including power distribution systems, emergency generators, UPS systems, lighting fixtures and controls, fire alarm/security systems and motor controls. Responsibilities also include conducting and authoring power system studies (short circuit, load flow and arc flash).
  • Expertly apply knowledge of commonly used electrical engineering and design concepts, principles, best practices, codes and guidelines related to the electrical engineering industry.
  • Lead the work of the electrical BES design team throughout all project phases ranging from feasibility studies, programming, conceptual design, schematic design, design development, construction documents, construction administration, commissioning and project close‑out.
  • Produce complete design packages including basis of design, contract drawings and construction specifications to meet project requirements.
  • Design full low and medium voltage electrical systems, including normal power, emergency power, battery backup, lighting, fire alarm and security/communication systems.
  • Design interior and exterior lighting systems including associated controls utilizing industry‑standard lighting design software such as AGi32.
  • Prepare electrical load analysis for each stage of design.
  • Prepare detailed project electrical systems drawings including power/lighting floor plans, single line diagrams, equipment/lighting fixture schedules, panelboard schedules, design details, grounding plans and site power/lighting.
  • Visit project sites as requested to verify existing conditions, monitor construction progress and prepare field observation reports.
  • Conduct facility infrastructure assessments, infrastructure/utility master planning, field surveys and code/energy evaluations.
  • Provide support for generation of cost estimates and participate with project BIM coordination to resolve coordination conflicts as required.
  • Conduct virtual or on‑site work sessions for projects in conjunction with other disciplines, owners, clients, contractors and other project stakeholders, including developing and delivering presentations as required.
  • Coordinate and assist affected disciplines with project addenda, RFIs, change proposal requests and change orders, and take responsibility for incorporating agreed‑upon changes into the project documents.
  • Assist in coordinating all phases of engineering, construction and inspection; resolve field problems through interpretation of contract documents and amendments; review and approve shop drawings; approve invoices for payment; recommend actions to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Support the development and mentorship of junior electrical engineers within HDR.
  • Using computer‑based programs such as SKM PowerTools, perform electrical system calculations, including load analysis, short circuit calculations, protective device coordination studies and arc flash studies.
  • Support the creation of life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) reports to select the most life‑cycle‑cost‑effective MEP systems, including renewable power systems as applicable.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of all internal electrical design products acting as a lead for quality assurance and quality control. Review designs completed by third‑party A/E firms and participate in comment‑resolution meetings.
  • Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with an electrical emphasis.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in electrical design of buildings (lighting, power or systems).
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., Professional Engineer or P.Eng.).
  • Extensive knowledge of building electrical power, lighting and signal design, including life safety systems and building management systems.
  • Strong computer knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoCAD, and electrical design software.
  • Attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee‑owned culture is a must.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of specialty lighting system controls and design experience with creating sequences of operation and controls diagrams.
  • Design experience with fire alarm, security and telecom systems.
  • Experience and understanding of sustainable building design, including sustainable design certifications such as LEED AP and/or WELL AP.
  • Experience with commissioning and retro‑commissioning, including industry certifications for commissioning authority or Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
  • Significant experience designing complex and large‑scale healthcare, education, science and technology and civic/government facilities as well as data centers and campus district utility plants.
  • Engineering experience with pump stations and water/wastewater facilities.
  • Experience designing renewable energy infrastructure.
  • Experience using load analysis software (SKM PowerTools) and electrical manufacturer equipment selection software.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Take ownership of assignments and work both independently and as part of a large project team.
  • Strongly motivated, well organized and showing professional initiative.
  • Candidate with strong mentoring skills is highly preferred.
