Job summary

Key responsibilities include EMI/EMC and ESD considerations, board layout, and creation of complete fabrication packages for high-volume production. A strong background in MIL‑STD and small-form-factor designs is required.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years direct design experience of circuit boards.
  • BS in Electrical Engineer required.
  • Experience in High Speed Digital design >1Gig is required.
  • PCB circuit board design, placement, stackup, fabrication, and assembly experience is required.
  • Must be able to perform low level PCB troubleshooting/debug and rework.
  • The ability to capture Schematics and Layout boards in Altium is desired.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-471 is desired.
  • Familiarity with design of network devices (Switches, Routers) and servers is a plus.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to customer support.

Responsibilities

  • Translate product level requirements into implementable circuits.
  • Work with Mechanical, Systems, and Management to develop electrical solutions.
  • Define potential electrical implementation solutions and discuss tradeoffs.
  • Design electrical solutions for PacStar products.
  • Implementing designs in Altium producing PCB and PCBA packages driving concepts, prototypes, and production platforms.
  • Low power (2–60W), low voltage (3, 5, 12, and 48 VDC) power circuits.
  • LI-ION battery charging and monitoring circuits.
  • PoE circuits.
  • High speed signal routing for Ethernet ports (100 Mbps to 10 Gbps).
  • Simple micro-processor design and firmware development (low level power on).
  • Design for small form factor and rugged environments.
  • Coordinate with purchasing and board build house for fabrication and assembly.
  • Provide complete design packages to enable production build.
  • Develop and provide PCB functional test plans for End of Line Testing.

Senior Electrical Engineer

This position requires an expert in the electrical design of custom circuit boards. All facets of design will be required of this individual. If you are a senior/principal engineer and want to focus on pure electrical design of products, this is the job for you. PacStar is a leading supplier of small, rugged, and modular networking solutions primarily to the DoD. The PacStar 400 series product line has become a ‘de-facto’ standard for deployed IP communications in the US Army and USMC. A series of wins over the last 3 years has resulted in significant growth in this business. This individual will be the primary electrical designer for the next generation of 400 series modules, and as such, a key member of the team continuing to move new technologies to the edge of the network.

Location: Portland OR Salary Range: $108,900 - 145,000 per year plus bonus Please note that the salary range information provided is a general guideline only, reflecting a position based in Oregon. Your Challenge:
  • Translate product level requirements into implementable circuits
  • Work with Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Management in an interactive manner to develop electrical solutions to project requirements
  • Define potential electrical implementation solutions and discuss tradeoffs
  • Design electrical solutions for PacStar products
  • Implementing Designs in Altium producing PCB and PCBA packages driving Concepts, Prototypes, and Production Platforms
  • Low power (2 – 60W), low voltage (3, 5, 12, and 48 VDC) power circuits
  • LI-ION battery charging and monitoring circuits
  • PoE circuits
  • High Speed signal routing for Ethernet ports (100 Mbps to 10 Gbps)
  • Simple micro-processor design and firmware development (mostly for low level power on)
  • Design for small Form Factor and physically rugged environments
  • Work across Functional Teams Providing PCB outline, mounting, and placement with Mechanical and Thermal Engineering identifying and addressing thermal and fitment issues as they occur
  • Layout of circuit boards in Altium PacStar currently employs a mixed model of laying out boards in-house and utilizing external resources when timing or expertise dictate
  • Ability to layout boards and generate complete board fabrication packages is desired
  • Provide detail electrical design guidance when utilizing external board layout resources (e.g. isolation, stack up, signal transmission requirements, etc)
  • Coordinate with purchasing and board build house for fabrication and assembly of engineering test units
  • Provide advance BOM’s to Purchasing
  • Be proactive in the identification of long lead items.
  • Acquire samples and small lots early in the design process to mitigate timing impact
  • Provide technical guidance as needed to board assembly house
  • Board Power on/debug/test
  • Receive first run engineering circuit boards
  • Perform basic Power on and debugging of boards
  • Develop and test any microprocessor-based functions on the board (low level power on, determine signs of life and basic functionality)
  • Develop and execute Design Verification Testing
  • Support Mechanical Engineering during physical integration of electronics into modules
  • Experience with EMI/EMC and ESD testing and debugging is preferred
  • Transition designs to manufacturing
  • Provide complete design packages to enable production build.
  • Board production quantities are in the high hundreds per year utilizing mostly on-shore suppliers.
  • Develop and provide PCB functional test plans for Assembly Manufacturer End of Line Testing
  • Support 3rd party Fab, Assembly, and System Production with problem resolution and test support when required
  • Support and Sustain designs once they are in the field
  • Provide technical support to field issues should they occur
  • Modify designs, if required, in response to field problems
  • Provide technical support for existing designs.
  • All are fully documented in Altium and have been in production for 1 to 3 years.
  • Coordinate/communicate with management regarding schedule, milestones, technical status, etc.
  • Performance requires physical attendance
  • Other duties as assigned
What You Bring
