Job description

The Senior Electrical Engineer at Construction Innovations works on complex transmission and distribution substations, leading engineering activities, mentoring team members, and ensuring projects meet safety and industry standards.

Overview

The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for the engineering of complex, standard, and non-standard transmission and distribution substations. The role serves as a technical leader and mentor, providing advanced-level resources to both utility and primary service customers.

Responsibilities
  • Design and engineer electrical transmission, distribution, and renewable facilities to meet customer requirements, industry standards, and safety requirements.
  • Lead engineering and design activities for medium/high voltage substations, switchyards, distribution, and transmission systems projects.
  • Develop and improve standards, templates, procedures, and guidelines to support continuous improvement within the department and the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Provide direction, consultation, and support for internal and external customers on various projects.
  • Create single-line, three-line, schematic, wiring, general arrangement, communications, SCADA, and layout drawings for medium/high voltage systems and equipment.
  • Prepare relay settings, coordination studies, load flow analysis, ground grid studies, arc flash reports, harmonics studies, MOPs, and other required High Voltage Reports or Procedures.
  • Prepare electrical equipment specifications and evaluate equipment submittals per customer requirements and applicable standards.
  • Review potential new projects to assist with scheduling, budgeting, and scoping.
  • Develop project kit bill of materials (BOMs).
  • Provide support to field team members during construction of facilities and conduct in-process quality verification checks in accordance with the QMS.
  • Mentor, train, and oversee the work of subordinate team members.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry practices, standards, and procedures of electrical power design, construction, materials, and equipment through industry engagement.
  • Provide leadership to the Power team and assist in completing projects on schedule and on budget.
  • Assist with product development, warranty, and troubleshooting issues.
Desired Skills & Experience
  • Minimum ten (10) years of Electrical Engineering experience, with five (5) years in substation engineering for medium and high voltage power systems or photovoltaic systems.
  • ABET‑accredited BS degree in Electrical Engineering required.
  • Registered Electrical Professional Engineer (PE) in at least one US state, with interest in obtaining licenses in other states.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, utility, and local codes and standards.
  • Strong ability to evaluate and resolve complex technical issues, manage projects, and build working relationships.
  • Experience with ETAP/SKM for arc flash, short circuit analysis, relay coordination, and conductor sizing.
  • Ability to train, develop, and mentor team members.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, time management, and multitasking skills.
  • Experience developing drawings in AutoCAD or similar programs.
  • Knowledge and design experience in battery storage, solar, and microgrids preferred.
  • Experience in design/build or EPC construction or manufacturing preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly sit, stand, and walk for long and short distances.
  • Required to hear with or without correction to interpret and receive information and directions.
  • Regular communication: verbal and written to describe and explain detailed instructions.
  • Capability to push, pull, lift, reach, and carry at least 10 pounds; occasionally up to 35 lbs.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Visual acuity with or without correction for reading documentation, analyzing data, and using electronic devices.
  • Use of fingers and hands for operating a computer or other electronic devices.
Work Environment

The Engineer spends most of the time in an office environment but may occasionally work at the manufacturing plant or on project sites. The office is open and collaborative; the plant has higher noise levels and frequent movement of people and equipment. On-site work is typical of construction environments, often in high‑voltage exposed areas and remote rural locations, with potential extreme weather conditions.

Reports to the Senior Design Manager.

Construction Innovations facilities and offices are located in Sacramento, CA, and Mather, CA.

Compensation

Salary range is $142,250.00 - $235,700.00 annually, depending on geography, skills, experience, and other job‑related factors.
