Job summary

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) seeks a Senior Safety Specialist to join the EHS, Radiation & Occupational Safety group. You will independently develop and lead comprehensive EHS programs, mentor staff, and collaborate across faculty and leadership to ensure safe, compliant operations.

Responsibilities include overseeing inspection programs, supporting lab and water quality initiatives, and delivering training. Strong regulatory knowledge and advanced reporting skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental, natural, or applied science with 3 years related experience.
• Must complete 24- or 40-hour HAZWOPER certification within 6 months of hire.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.

Responsibilities

• Senior safety specialist independently develops, leads, and executes EHS projects and programs.
• Mentor junior staff and develop/train faculty & staff.
• Oversee the Industrial Safety Inspection Program and participate in the Laboratory Inspection Program.
• Assist the Water Quality & Industrial Hygiene Programs.
• Serve on one or more safety committees and interact with EHS professionals, Principal Investigators, and UTMB Executive Leadership.
• Develop advanced safety reports using computer-based tools.
• Knowledge of applicable environmental health and safety rules and regulations.
• Facilitate team development and ensure safe work practices.
