Job summary

McFarland Construction seeks an Senior EHS Specialist to lead safety and environmental compliance across our construction projects. This hands-on role develops site-specific EHS policies, conducts inspections, delivers training, and investigates incidents to ensure a safe, compliant work environment.

The ideal candidate has 2–5 years of EHS experience in commercial construction, OSHA knowledge, and a passion for building a strong safety culture on diverse projects.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety or related field; 1–3 years EHS in construction preferred.
Working knowledge of OSHA 1926 construction standards.
OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Safety certification required.
Experience managing subcontractor safety compliance and site safety plans.
Strong documentation, reporting, and communication skills.

Position Summary

We are seeking an Senior EHS professional to lead safety and environmental compliance efforts across our construction projects. This role is responsible for developing and implementing site-specific EHS policies, conducting inspections and audits, delivering safety training, and investigating incidents to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. This is a hands‑on role ideal for a safety‑driven professional who thrives in a fast‑paced construction environment and is committed to building a strong culture of safety awareness.

Key Responsibilities

EHS Program Implementation

Develop, implement, and maintain site‑specific EHS policies and procedures.
Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal EHS regulations.
Conduct hazard assessments and recommend corrective actions.
Provide guidance on environmental compliance, such as waste management and stormwater pollution prevention.

Site Inspections and Audits

Perform regular inspections of the construction site to identify potential hazards.
Ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Prepare detailed reports on inspection findings and follow up on corrective actions.

Training and Education

Conduct EHS training sessions for employees, contractors, and subcontractors.
Develop and deliver toolbox talks and safety meetings.
Promote a culture of safety awareness through education and engagement.

Incident Response and Reporting

Investigate accidents, incidents, and near‑misses to determine root causes.
Prepare detailed reports and recommend measures to prevent recurrence.
Assist in emergency response planning and drills.

Documentation and Reporting

Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, and training activities.
Submit required EHS compliance reports to regulatory agencies.
Track and analyze safety metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.

Collaboration and Communication

Collaborate with project managers, supervisors, and workers to address safety concerns.
Serve as a point of contact for regulatory agencies and external auditors.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, or related field
1–3 years of EHS experience; construction industry exposure preferred
Working knowledge of OSHA 1926 construction standards. OSHA 510 (Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry) a plus
OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Safety certification
Experience managing subcontractor/trade partner safety compliance, including submittal review and site‑specific safety plans
Actively contributes to a positive jobsite safety culture through visible engagement and peer coaching
Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification
Proficient in MS Office; familiarity with EHS management software (e.g. SALUS, HammerTech) a plus
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Comfortable presenting training material to field personnel
Willingness to travel to project sites as needed (~25%)

Ideal Candidate Profile

Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards
Hands‑on experience conducting site inspections, hazard assessments, and safety audits
Skilled in incident investigation techniques, including root cause analysis
Experience developing and delivering EHS training, toolbox talks, and safety meetings
Strong understanding of environmental compliance (waste management, stormwater pollution prevention)
Detail‑oriented with strong documentation, reporting, and record‑keeping skills
A proactive communicator who can collaborate effectively with project teams, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies
Someone who thrives in a fast‑paced, field‑driven construction environment
A self‑starter who can work independently and manage multiple priorities and job sites
Committed to building a strong culture of safety awareness through education and engagement
OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Safety certified, with First Aid/CPR certification
Willing and able to travel up to 25% as needed
