The Free Press is seeking a sharp, creative Senior Editor to join our editorial team in New York. You will edit stories from staff writers and contributors, delivering agenda-setting journalism and ensuring distinctive, rigorous work published across our report.

You will source, edit, and shape pitches, guide contributors through the drafting process, and collaborate with design, audience, and production teams to maximize reach and impact.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience as an editor in journalism, publishing, or related fields.
• Demonstrated skill in editing investigations, op-eds, essays, and reported features.
• A strong editorial voice with the ability to sharpen arguments and elevate prose.

Responsabilités

• Source, commission, and edit contributions from freelance writers, subject-matter experts, and opinion leaders.
• Shape pitches into strong, clear, and original stories aligned with The Free Press’s editorial standards.
• Provide structural, line, and copy edits as needed, guiding contributors through the process from draft to publication.
• Set priorities, maintain an editorial calendar, and ensure timely delivery of content across our report.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with contributors.
• Help brainstorm editorial packages, special series, and big-picture coverage ideas.
• Collaborate with design, audience, and production teams to maximize the reach and impact of our work.

Overview:

The Free Press is looking for a sharp, creative, and highly organized Senior Editor to join our editorial team. In this role, you’ll work at the heart of the editorial operation working to edit stories from both staff writers and outside contributors on a wide range of topics. You’ll be responsible for delivering agenda-setting journalism and helping to ensure The Free Press is publishing distinctive, rigorous, can’t-get-anywhere-else work.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Basic Qualifications:

8+ years of experience as an editor in journalism, publishing, or related fields.

Demonstrated skill in editing investigations, op-eds, essays, and reported features.

A strong editorial voice with the ability to sharpen arguments and elevate prose.

Additional Qualifications:

Exemplary organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple projects at once.

Familiarity with the current media and cultural landscape, with an eye for stories that break through.

A track record of working with a wide range of writers, from seasoned journalists to emerging voices.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hiring Salary Range: $120,000.00 - 170,000.00.

The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
