Job summary

VIZ Media in New York is seeking a Senior or Executive Editor to join our Original Publishing team. The Senior/Executive Editor will commission and acquire commercially appealing books with an emphasis on Asian pop culture and entertainment, developing the trade list and editing approximately 10-15 original books per year.

Reporting to the Publishing Director, this role partners with authors, agents, editorial, design, production, and marketing to manage projects from ideation to completion,

Qualifications

• 8+ years in publishing with senior editorial experience.
• Experience managing multiple projects from acquisition to publication.
• Strong organizational and prioritization skills with reliable delivery.
• Extensive experience managing freelance creative teams (designers, photographers, writers).
• Excellent written and verbal communication, with strong internal relationship management.
• Ability to problem solve creatively with strong attention to detail.
• Interest in publishing, entertainment, and pop culture; knowledge of anime/manga is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Manage new publishing projects from ideation to completion.
• Identify opportunities and commission authors and creatives.
• Evaluate proposals and build the commercial case for acquisitions.
• Undertake developmental and line edits; review illustrated layouts.
• Negotiate and manage relationships with agents and authors.
• Engage with authors/agents through acquisition and production, ensuring approvals and contracts.
• Establish and manage production schedules; report on trends and audiences.
• Collaborate with freelancers, copydesk, designers, art directors, and production teams.
• Prepare sales and marketing materials as required.
