Job summary

VIZ Media, the world leader in English-language versions of manga and anime, seeks a Senior/Executive Editor for Original Publishing to commission and acquire books aligned with Asian pop culture. You’ll build the trade list and edit ~10–15 original titles yearly, partnering with authors, agents, and internal teams.

Reporting to Publishing Director, the role blends ideation, negotiation, and creative oversight across formats, with travel as needed.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of publishing industry experience with senior editorial roles.
• Experience managing multiple concurrent projects from acquisition to completion.
• Proven ability to deliver on deadlines with strong organizational skills.
• Experience working with freelance creatives (designers, photographers, writers).
• Excellent written and verbal communication, internal stakeholder collaboration.
• Interest in publishing, entertainment, and pop culture; anime/manga knowledge is a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Creative Writing, or related field.

Responsibilities

• Manage new publishing projects from ideation to completion.
• Identify opportunities and commission authors and other creatives.
• Evaluate proposals and build the commercial case for acquisitions.
• Undertake developmental and line edits and review layouts.
• Negotiate relationships with agents and authors.
• Engage with authors/agents through acquisition to production.
• Report on trends and audiences; highlight growth areas.
• Establish and manage production schedules; collaborate with freelancers.
• Prepare sales and marketing materials as required.
