Springer Nature in the US is seeking an Associate/Senior Editor for BMC Health Services Research and BMC series medical journals. Based in New York or Philadelphia, this hybrid role combines editorial leadership with strategic development.

You will manage peer review, collaborate with Editorial Boards, and drive content development across journals. A PhD or MD and substantial editorial publishing experience are required, with strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Qualifications

• PhD or MD level in health services research, public health, or biomedical discipline
• Substantial editorial experience in scientific publishing required for Senior Editor level
• Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate scientific content and assess manuscripts for rigor, novelty, relevance, and impact
• Strong decision-making skills with the ability to make balanced, objective, evidence-based editorial decisions
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a customer-focused approach
• Proven ability to build productive relationships with diverse stakeholders and demonstrate strong interpersonal awareness
• Strong collaborative mindset with experience working across teams and functions
• Excellent organizational, prioritization, and project management skills with operational excellence
• Demonstrated resilience navigating ambiguity and changing business needs
• Ability to balance short-term deadlines with long-term strategic goals

Responsibilities

• Develop a journal development strategy for BMC Health Services Research and a BMC series medical journal using data-driven planning
• Collaborate with Journals Group to support subject-specific publishing strategies
• Identify, commission, and develop reviews, collections, and supplements with strong community partnerships
• Oversee editorial handling of manuscripts ensuring rigor, novelty, relevance and impact
• Make sound editorial decisions and guide Editorial Board Members
• Investigate and resolve publishing and research integrity cases
• Collaborate with internal teams to resolve editorial issues and maintain author satisfaction
• Contribute to editorial policy development with evidence-based thinking
• Build relationships with Editorial Board Members, reviewers, and authors
• Lead discussions with Senior Board Members on strategy, recruitment, policy updates
• Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and engagement of Editorial Board Members
• Organize Editorial Board meetings and strategic discussions with strong communication and organizational skills
• Ensure adherence to journal policies, editorial standards and best practices
• Partner with marketing teams to increase journal visibility and community engagement
• Develop website content, blogs, and social media to showcase BMC values
• Represent journals at conferences and networking events
• Foster a supportive, high-performing editorial culture during periods of change or high workload
