Job summary

Synopsys, Inc. is seeking a Principal EDA R&D Engineer in Austin to lead R&D projects, advance substrate design automation, and collaborate with foundries and OSATs. You will shape tool suites with C++, Python, and TCL, translating manufacturing requirements into functional tooling.

The role combines hands-on implementation with technical strategy, guiding engineers and engaging with senior customers on design methodologies and product direction in a fast-moving semiconductor environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
• 10+ years of experience in EDA software development with focus on physical design automation
• Deep technical expertise in package substrate physical design methodologies
• Strong programming proficiency in Python or TCL for tool integration and automation
• Demonstrated track record leading R&D projects that resulted in production software capabilities
• Experience collaborating with foundries, OSATs, or substrate manufacturers on Design Rule Manuals and manufacturing formats such as ODB++
• Solid foundation in computational geometry and algorithm design for layout automation

Responsibilities

• Lead R&D projects advancing package substrate design automation (auto-routing, DRC engines, PDN analysis, DFM capabilities)
• Drive technical direction for database models enabling schematic-driven layout workflows
• Develop and optimize EDA software using C++, Python, and TCL for geometry, constraint solving, and physical design automation
• Collaborate with foundries and assembly/test companies to implement substrate technologies from DRCs to manufacturing requirements
• Define collateral input/output formats and ensure database architectures support complex designs
• Provide technical guidance to engineers, review designs and tradeoffs
• Engage with customers in senior-level discussions about substrate design methodology and product direction
