Job summary

Yahoo Holdings Inc. is seeking a Principal Research Scientist (IC6) to lead high-scale optimization for budget control, pacing, and bidding algorithms within the DSP Optimization team.

You will drive production-ready research, architect AI-augmented workflows, and mentor researchers while collaborating with engineering and product leadership to deliver measurable improvements in real-time advertising performance.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in CS, EE, OR, stats, math or related quantitative field.
  • 8+ years designing and deploying large-scale optimization or ML models in production.
  • Strong foundation in probability, convex/stochastic optimization, and control theory.
  • Hands-on production programming experience (Python, Java, C++, SQL, Spark).
  • Experience with AI pair-programming and developer automation tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research, architecture, and production deployment of large-scale optimization algorithms for budget pacing and bid optimization.
  • Implement agentic AI workflows and automated experimentation to accelerate research-to-production velocity.
  • Set technical strategy and long-term vision for the DSP optimization ecosystem.
  • Apply control theory and ML to real-time marketplace dynamics with uncertain signals.
  • Guide code refactoring, automated testing, and AI-driven research synthesis.
  • Own multi-quarter research initiatives from formulation to rollout with rigorous metrics.
  • Partner with engineering and product to scale algorithms across systems.
  • Mentor senior scientists and engineers, fostering an AI-forward culture.
  • Communicate results and architectural choices to executives and cross-functional partners.
