Job summary

STV is seeking a Senior Drainage Engineer to lead drainage design for transportation projects across the West, with a focus on California. You will guide complex design efforts, support Caltrans and local agencies, and mentor junior staff while delivering high-visibility programs.

The role offers flexibility to base in several CA offices (Los Angeles, Irvine, San Francisco, Rancho Cucamonga) or Portland/Bellevue.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
• 13-18 years of progressive experience in drainage design, preferably for transportation infrastructure projects.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Washington, Oregon, or California (preferred) or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Experience with hydrology and hydraulic analysis software including HEC-RAS, HydroCalc, XPSWMM, StormCAD, and related tools.
• Experience with stormwater management design, drainage systems, and culverts.
• Familiarity with BMPs, LID strategies, and regulatory coordination.
• Proficient with MicroStation and AutoCAD Civil 3D; OpenRoads Designer and ArcGIS.

Responsibilities

• Lead drainage engineering design for transportation infrastructure projects including roadway, rail, bridge, and highway improvements.
• Oversee stormwater management system design, drainage systems, culverts, hydraulic structures, BMPs, and LID features.
• Perform and review hydrology and hydraulic analyses to support design decisions and regulatory compliance.
• Support stormwater permitting, erosion and sediment control approvals, and regulatory coordination.
• Prepare and review technical reports, drainage reports, and cost estimates with emphasis on clarity and quality.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary design efforts to ensure integrated project delivery.
• Provide QA/QC leadership for drainage deliverables including calculations, plans, and permit documentation.
• Mentor and develop early-career drainage engineers and staff.
