Job summary

Insight Global is seeking a Distribution Engineer II to support an electric utility client in the Chicago area. Hybrid schedule with about 20% field work and 80% engineering design work, located downtown Chicago near Greektown.

The candidate will design overhead and underground distribution systems, develop engineering packages, and coordinate with stakeholders through design, permitting, construction, and closeout phases.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical/Civil/Mechanical) required or equivalent combo.
• 8+ years of electric utility distribution engineering/design experience.
• Experience with overhead and underground distribution projects.
• Field visits, measurements, site assessments, and coordination with construction teams.
• Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Support electric distribution projects from pole replacements to complex system rebuilds.
• Perform field visits to collect measurements, photos, and infrastructure data.
• Develop design packages, drawings, one-line diagrams, and BOMs.
• Utilize GIS and design software to model overhead and underground systems.
• Coordinate with stakeholders, field crews, PMs, and engineering teams through design to closeout.

Insight Global is seeking a Distribution Engineer II to support a large electric utility client in the Chicago area. This individual will join a growing utility engineering team focused on overhead and underground electric distribution design projects. The role offers the opportunity to work on everything from routine pole replacement projects to major storm hardening, circuit rebuild, and infrastructure modernization initiatives.This is a hybrid position based in downtown Chicago (near Greektown) with approximately 20% field work and 80% engineering design work. The ideal candidate will have prior utility distribution experience and be able to contribute with minimal oversight.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Support electric distribution projects ranging from simple pole replacement programs to complex system rebuild and storm hardening initiativesPerform field visits to collect measurements, photographs, and existing infrastructure informationSupport staking activities, site evaluations, and construction coordination effortsDesign overhead and underground electric distribution systemsDevelop engineering and construction packages, including drawings, one-line diagrams, and bills of materialUtilize utility-specific software platforms such as Smallworld GIS, MicroStation, and Asset Suite 8Perform engineering calculations and support conductor selection, routing, system improvements, and reliability projectsDesign solutions for:Pole replacementsPole reframing projectsReconductoring initiativesCircuit rebuildsCircuit reroutesStorm hardening programsCoordinate with utility stakeholders, field crews, project managers, and engineering teamsSupport projects throughout design, permitting, construction, and closeout phasesEnsure designs comply with utility standards, safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines

Work Environment

Hybrid schedule:Monday & Friday: RemoteTuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: Onsite in ChicagoApproximately 20% field work and 80% office/design workOccasional local travel to project sites throughout ComEd service territoryMileage reimbursement available when personal vehicle use is required

Skills and Requirements

Must Have QualificationsBachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related Engineering discipline8+ years of electric utility distribution engineering or distribution design experienceExperience supporting overhead (OH) and underground (UG) electric distribution projectsExperience conducting field visits, collecting measurements, performing site assessments, and supporting construction activitiesExperience developing distribution construction packages, engineering drawings, bills of material, and permitting documentationUnderstanding of utility engineering standards, construction practices, and design methodologiesAbility to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneouslyStrong communication skills and ability to work directly with utility clients, field personnel, designers, and engineersProficiency with Microsoft Office SuiteHighly PreferredPrevious ComEd experienceExperience supporting Exelon utilitiesExperience working within utility work management systemsAbility to step into projects with minimal training and supervision
