Description

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) seeks an individual for the position of Senior Director of Policy and Strategy for our Advocacy Division. This position is responsible for researching and making recommendations on policy areas of concern to the ADA and making recommendations for execution of legislative and regulatory strategies in alignment with organizational goals. This position may also be assigned to support work to identify, secure, and manage partnership initiatives. Reporting to the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, this position will require a high-level of collaboration with internal and external partners and audiences. Candidates for this position must have experience in relevant policy areas and be able to work independently, managing multiple priority projects.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) seeks an individual for the position of Senior Director of Policy and Strategy for our Advocacy Division. This position is responsible for researching and making recommendations on policy areas of concern to the ADA and making recommendations for execution of legislative and regulatory strategies in alignment with organizational goals. This position may also be assigned to support work to identify, secure, and manage partnership initiatives. Reporting to the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, this position will require a high-level of collaboration with internal and external partners and audiences. Candidates for this position must have experience in relevant policy areas and be able to work independently, managing multiple priority projects.

Responsibilities

Key functions of the position include:

  • Work collaboratively with other staff and partner organizations in the development of long-term policy priorities and strategy to further the mission of the American Diabetes Association
    • Identify 2-3 policy priority areas per year to develop via stakeholder meetings, surveys, clinical workgroup, policy events, landscape documents, etc.
    • Develop policy briefs on the identified areas and other materials as necessary
  • Identify and pitch new opportunities for partners
    • Policy and strategy development for new partnership projects
    • Project manage the implementation of the partnership and aligned goals
  • In collaboration with other staff make recommendations and draft annual policy agenda
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of policies impacting people with diabetes at the state, federal, and regulatory levels
  • Provide reliable analysis and strategic guidance on developments related to the ADA’s policy priorities and other timely issues
  • Develop and disseminate policy analysis and collaborate on materials for the state government affairs team
  • Conduct research as necessary, review and evaluate legislation, determine the benefits and drawbacks of existing policy, and serve as project manager for policy research projects
  • Initiate, plan, and execute events in support of policy priorities
  • Respond to policy-related inquiries from the state and federal affairs teams
  • Participate and engage in coalition activities as it relates to the policy priorities of the ADA
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs to oversee and manage the policy work of the ADA
  • Work with grassroots to update information on policy priorities on the website and in communications with advocates
  • Work collaboratively with the state government affairs team to implement policy priorities and strategy

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Masters or other advanced degree preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in public policy arena with emphasis on policy development (either with non-profit, state or federal legislative office or regulatory agency).
  • A genuine dedication and personal commitment to preventing and curing diabetes and improving the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
  • Strong writing and research skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively multitask, make informed decisions, use independent judgment, establish priorities and provide clarity to senior leaders.
  • Frequent travel is required.
  • Remote working environment.
