Job summary

The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia seeks a Director of Operations for the NanoSTAR Institute in Charlottesville. The role directs daily operations—administrative, financial, and HR—while collaborating with the institute's director and faculty to advance translational nanomedicine initiatives.

The position leads strategic planning, budgeting, and staffing, serving as the senior fiscal officer and liaison across university units.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree or combination of education and related experience in lieu of a degree required.
• 3+ years of relevant experience required.
• Master's Degree in a relevant field preferred.
• 5 years of experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develops and assists in implementing short- and long-term strategic goals aligned with institute goals.
• Serves on the institute senior leadership team and manages business operations with guidance from leadership.
• Assists with NanoSTAR educational initiatives, including undergraduate programs and international exchange.
• Collaborates with HR, finance, IT, and facilities management.
• Formulates and improves center procedures in line with policies and regulations.
• Acts as senior fiscal officer, ensuring accurate financial reports and internal controls.
• Develops annual budgets and oversees expenditures within approved budgets.
• Mentors NanoSTAR staff and develops staffing plans for priority programs.
• Manages staff merit, hiring/onboarding, and annual evaluations.
• Coordinates space surveys, safety, and cleanliness of center and labs.
• Maintains emergency preparedness activities across the School and University.
• Other duties may be assigned.
