Job description

Senior Director, Nurse Scientist

The Senior Director, Nurse Scientist is a role model for transformational leadership, responsible for overseeing departmental operations and finances, evaluating performance, demonstrating customer satisfaction, strategic and operational planning, program development, and quality assurance. This role serves as a leader and mentor within UVA Health and directs the development and coordination of UVA Medical Center's nursing research program.

The role involves coordinating, managing, and providing expertise in the development, implementation, and dissemination of nursing research studies led primarily by nurses within the medical center, in collaboration with UVA Health entities. The Senior Director fosters an environment that integrates nursing research to enhance care delivery and professional practice, aiming to improve recruitment and retention of exceptional nurses. Maintaining a research program that results in national dissemination and external funding is essential. As a UVA School of Nursing faculty member, contributions to the academic preparation of nursing students are expected.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Foster a collaborative work environment promoting effective communication, team engagement, retention, and professional growth. Manage human resources effectively.
  2. Participate in policy evaluation, creation, and implementation, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
  3. Align resource allocation with departmental needs, developing plans to address resource challenges.
  4. Assess and improve departmental performance across customer service, clinical care, and financial goals, achieving clinical outcomes aligned with national standards and strategic plans.
  5. Support the Medical Center's strategic initiatives through leadership activities.
  6. Forecast and manage departmental budgets accurately.
  7. Develop and participate in quality improvement and system enhancement programs.
  8. Establish and promote a nursing research philosophy to advance nursing science and improve patient outcomes.
  9. Lead research programs to enhance patient care quality and outcomes.
  10. Conduct research needs assessments and incorporate findings into strategic planning.
  11. Serve as an advisor for research committees and initiatives, providing educational and leadership support.
  12. Contribute to the UVA School of Nursing's mission through educational activities and research collaborations.
  13. Supervise personnel involved in the Nursing Research Program.
  14. Provide expert consultation throughout all research stages.
  15. Foster collaborations with health system and academic departments, including IRBs.
  16. Maintain rigorous data and file management processes for research activities.
  17. Seek funding as a principal investigator to support research programs.
  18. Disseminate research findings and translate them into practice.
  19. Report regularly on research program status to leadership.
  20. Ensure compliance with Magnet benchmarks and contribute to documentation.
  21. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within research activities.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements

Education: Research doctorate in nursing (PhD or DNSc) or related field (ScD, EdD). If in a discipline other than nursing, must hold BSN or MSN.

Experience: 3-5 years of clinical research experience, knowledge of grant funding processes, dissemination activities, mentoring skills, and eligibility for faculty appointment at UVA School of Nursing.

License/Certification: Current RN license and eligibility for Virginia licensure.

Physical Demands

This position is primarily sedentary, involving extensive computer use, with occasional travel to meetings and programs.
