Job summary

Metra Commuter Rail in Illinois is seeking a Director of Capital Delivery Construction to lead large-scale rail projects such as bridges, tracks, stations, and yards. You will supervise staff from pre-construction through closeout, ensuring projects meet schedule and budget targets.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering Capital Projects, you will manage contracts, cost estimates, budgets, and regulatory interfaces.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction, construction management, or related field; or four years of combined education/experience.
• Ten years of engineering or construction experience including project management.
• Five years of direct supervisory experience with day-to-day staff management.
• Strong knowledge of engineering construction principles and railroad systems.
• Strong budgeting, scheduling, and project management skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Microsoft Word and Excel at an intermediate level.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regionally.
• Ability to work flexible hours and visit construction sites.

Responsibilities

• Supervise staff across all stages of capital construction projects.
• Plan, schedule, budget, and allocate resources; coordinate with contractors.
• Develop management reports detailing project status and finances.
• Review contract changes, cost estimates, and change orders.
• Ensure regulatory compliance with codes, safety standards, and permits.
• Facilitate site inspections and quality benchmarks; corrective actions as needed.
• Advise on engineering and construction best practices.
• Oversee staffing decisions, evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
• Travel within Metra’s six-county region and to FAT or seminars.
