Job summary

Nuro is seeking a Head of Systems Engineering to own the systems backbone that enables the Nuro Driver to scale safely and commercially. This leader will oversee end-to-end systems engineering across autonomy, software and hardware, safety case, requirements, validation, and deployment readiness.

This role sits at the center of product, safety, and commercial execution, shaping architecture, evidence, and readiness for multi-city deployments and new vehicle platforms.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of systems engineering in automotive/aerospace/defense/robotics or safety-critical domains.
• 7+ years managing managers and scaling engineering teams.
• Experience leading systems engineering across hardware and software with safety-critical development (safety case, hazard analysis, risk assessment, validation evidence, deployment readiness).
• Strong communication skills to explain tradeoffs to engineers, executives, and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Own and scale Nuro’s Systems Engineering across autonomy, hardware, safety case, requirements, validation, system performance, and deployment readiness.
• Define the systems engineering strategy to support growth across cities, vehicle platforms, and partnerships.
• Translate goals into system requirements, measurable performance targets, validation plans, and launch readiness frameworks.
• Own architecture, decomposition, and interfaces for the Nuro Driver across autonomy software, sensing, compute, vehicle software and hardware, and safety.
• Drive the system-level safety case with cross-functional teams ensuring rigorous, evidence-based deployment readiness.
• Define the technical framework for public-road operation, commercialization, and geographic expansion.
• Lead analyses and trade studies informing architecture, sensing configuration, compute strategy, vehicle integration, safety mitigations, and ODD expansion.
• Create mechanisms for risk identification, readiness reviews, governance, and launch decision-making.
• Build and retain a high-caliber Systems Engineering organization.
