Job description

Senior Digital Editor - National Geographic

The Senior Digital Editor contributes to and executes National Geographic’s visually rich and scientifically sourced digital storytelling. This editing role makes data-informed content decisions that drive results by creating relevant, timely, and conversation-worthy content with a National Geographic lens across text and video platforms.

You will spearhead content creation from planning through publication, pitching content targeted for platform-specific audiences that meet acquisition goals. Experience and/or interest in Animals and Wildlife topics is preferred. The senior editor will work with and develop a network of seasoned writers and will adhere to editorial standards that drive results by being selective about story assignments, intentional with story structure, and creative in experimentation to advance Nat Geo’s digital content offering. They should have a keen understanding of how content is consumed on different digital platforms, and specifically how it should be optimized for Search and Social Media platforms.

While this senior digital editor will collaborate with editors across the entire editorial operation to adhere to digital best practices, they will be tuned into the daily conversation about animals and wildlife.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and suggest framing for pitches at regularly scheduled brainstorm and pitch meetings
  • Identify stories that align with KPIs and explore new topic areas for experimentation
  • Build and maintain a freelance network of writers specializing in animals and wildlife
  • Participate actively in digital editorial pitch meetings, leading discussions and executing decisions
  • Collaborate with the Digital Engagement Team to enhance search strategies, craft headlines, and test new digital tactics
  • Work with the Editorial Newsletter team to boost subscriptions and reader engagement
  • Coordinate with the Social team on digital content ideas and larger projects
  • Meet weekly with the Manager of Digital Editorial for feedback and new ideas
  • Coach junior editors as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of editorial experience in digital publishing
  • Strong editing background, experience building a freelance network, and broad SEO knowledge with proven headline-writing skills
  • Experience editing digital content across text and video platforms
  • Proficiency with data-driven tools
  • Ability to develop story ideas from brainstorms
  • Skill in writing digitally optimized headlines and content
  • Ability to recognize and create multimedia-rich story ideas
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Resilience and a positive attitude under pressure
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse personalities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience editing stories about animals and wildlife
  • Experience creating social media content
  • Knowledge of industry trends and competitive media landscape
  • Understanding of the priorities of large media companies like Disney
  • Patience and adaptability in a dynamic environment

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in journalism, digital media, or communications

***This role is based in Washington, DC, working in-office 4 days a week (Monday-Thursday) and remote on Fridays. Not available in other locations.

The salary range in Washington, D.C. is $94,200 - $126,200 annually, with actual offers based on experience, skills, and location. Benefits include bonuses, incentives, and comprehensive health and financial packages.
