Job summary

MIT Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, MA is seeking a Diamond Turning Machinist to own end-to-end fabrication of high-precision optical and mechanical parts. You will develop fabrication approaches, design/build fixtures, program CAM, and operate the diamond turning machines, collaborating closely with program engineers on parts still being defined.

The role requires 8+ years in diamond turning, ability to read optical drawings, and experience mentoring others.

Qualifications

8+ years in simultaneous diamond turn machining with setup, CAM programming and tooling selection.
Reading optical drawings to plan fabrication approaches.
Mentor and instruct junior machinists.
CAM programming experience.
Proficiency withMicrosoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Experience with SolidWorks CAD software.
Experience with Diffsys CAM software.
Experience with interferometer or profilometer measurement.
Preferred: experience fabricating aspheres, free-forms, OAPs, elliptical mirrors, and lenslets.
Prior work in high-mix, low-volume job shop environments.

Responsibilities

Machine high-precision optical and mechanical components via simultaneous diamond turning, including setup, CAM programming, and tooling selection.
Read and interpret optical drawings to plan the fabrication approach.
Collaborate with program engineers and other machinists to develop a holistic fabrication strategy for complex parts.
Mentor and instruct junior machinists.
Participate in manufacturability reviews and provide feedback.
Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow safety protocols.
