Job summary

Alder is building an intelligence-first operating system for eldercare, hosted on AWS with a data lakehouse at its core. The Principal DevOps & Data Engineer is a hybrid role that owns the platform and the data layer, ensuring reliability, compliance and cost efficiency while analytics features are enabled.

You will collaborate with data and application engineers, implement HIPAA-aligned guardrails, and mentor the team.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in DevOps and data engineering roles.
• Strong AWS experience with multi-account environments and IAM.
• Experience with HIPAA-regulated environments or healthcare/regulated industries.
• Proficiency in Python and shell scripting; comfortable with reading Java services.
• Clear written and verbal communication in a hybrid, small-team setting.

Responsibilities

• Own AWS multi-account environment and guardrails across Dev, Preprod, Prod, Internal Tools, Management, Data & Analytics.
• Operate Kubernetes platform (EKS) and GitLab CI/CD pipelines; manage deployments, environments, secrets, rollbacks, tooling.
• Define infrastructure as code (Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation) for reproducible environments.
• Improve observability, incident response, cost and security across services.
• Manage the data lakehouse on S3 with medallion layers, dbt transformations and Athena; ingest from PostgreSQL and legacy systems.
• Build and schedule reliable data pipelines with data contracts, lineage and quality checks; support BI users.
• Collaborate with application engineers on event-sourced models and warehouse reporting.
• Implement PHI/PII handling, encryption, access control, retention, auditing.
• Document runbooks and mentor the team on DevOps and data engineering practices.
